Havixbeck ( Low German : Havkesbierk) is a municipality in the Coesfeld district on the northeastern edge of the Baumberge in northern North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

Havixbeck lies at the foot of the Baumberge , the highest peak of which, the 188.7  m high Westerberg , already rises in the Nottulner area. The Münstersche Aa rises to the west of the village and flows into the Ems after crossing the city of Münster near Greven .

Neighboring communities

Havixbeck borders (clockwise, starting in the north) on Altenberge ( Steinfurt district ), the independent city of Münster and Senden , Nottuln and Billerbeck (Coesfeld district).

Community structure

In addition to the town center of the same name and the monastery village of Hohenholte just under four kilometers to the northeast, the community of Havixbeck also includes the Gennerich (village farmers), Herkentrup, Masbeck, Lasbeck, Natrup, Poppenbeck, Tilbeck, Walingen, Brock and Schonebeck communities. The latter two belonged to the Roxel office until December 31, 1974 before the municipal area reform .

history

For the Havixbeck area, a prehistoric and early historical settlement is proven by archaeological finds ( Tardenoisian finds from the fifth millennium BC in the farmers of Lasbeck in 1938). A diabase ax from around 2000 BC was found in Herkentrup .

Around 790, the Franks built a farm on the old Königsstrasse in Havixbeck area, which was used for administration and management. At that time there were already agricultural settlements on the northeastern roof of the Baumberge, where the spring water rises to the surface in horizons. The earliest written mentions concern farms in Natrup (890 - Nordthorpe), Tilbeck (890) and Poppenbeck (1050). Gennerich is also mentioned in 890 in a document in the database of the Werden Abbey ; the term "Geldrike" used there comes from the words money , synonymous with sacrifice, retaliation or payment, and Rike / Recke , which means hedge.

Around the year 900 Havixbeck , which had previously belonged to Billerbeck, was raised to an independent parish. The Schulzenhof Havixbeck, first mentioned in 1040, is said to have come into the possession of the bishopric of Münster as early as 900 as a gift from the Wiger couple . In 1137 the place Havixbeck was first mentioned as Haueskesbeke in a deed of donation from the Münster bishop Werner to the cathedral chapter . The place name goes back to a brook - the syllable "hab" or "hav" stands for water . The interpretation of the name as Habichtsbach (see also the municipal coat of arms ) is documented.

In the district of Hohenholte, a Benedictine monastery was founded in 1142 by Liutbert von Beveren at the farm of the same name, which was occupied by monks from the Nikiasiusstift in Reims . Liutbert's brother Theodoric became the first prior . The monks left Hohenholte as early as 1188 and handed the monastery over to Bishop Hermann II von Katzenelnbogen , who handed the facility over to Augustinian women. After the fire of 1292, Hohenholte Monastery was rebuilt at its current location. In 1557 it was converted into a free worldly aristocratic women's monastery. In 1811 the monastery was closed. Hohenholte was raised to an independent parish in 1859, the areas of Havixbeck, Roxel and Altenberge were assigned.

The first documented mentions of Haus Stapel and Haus Tor Kulen , which was later expanded into Hülshoff Castle and had been the ancestral seat of the Droste family in Hülshoff since 1417 , date from 1211 and 1349 respectively. In 1797 Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was born at Hülshoff Castle , who is counted among Germany's most important writers and poets .

Havixbeck was hit by fire disasters several times, for example in 1559, when the church and the buildings around the church square were destroyed by flames, and in 1577. On April 25, 1690, 44 houses and part of the church complex went down in the fire. The Schulzenhof Havixbeck, which burned down in 1729 and was located in the middle of the village, was rebuilt in 1734 just outside.

In terms of administration , Havixbeck can look back on an eventful history. Havixbeck originally belonged to Skopingau , one of the Saxon districts in the Münsterland. In the Principality of Münster it was assigned to the Horstmar office. In the aftermath of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss (1803) parts of Havixbeck (Tilbeck, Walingen and Hohenholte) became Prussian , Havixbeck itself was added to the Principality of Salm-Horstmar . During the French period in the Grand Duchy of Berg , Havixbeck was temporarily assigned to Coesfeld , then again to Münster. In 1816 Havixbeck became part of the newly formed Coesfeld district , but in 1832 it became part of the Münster district as part of an administrative reorganization. In 1841 Havixbeck was raised to a parish. The independence initially ended with the assignment to the Roxel office in 1929. It was not until May 15, 1955 that Havixbeck was returned to the status of an independent municipality. As a result of the municipal area reform , the municipality , which has now been enlarged by parts of the dissolved municipality of Roxel, has been part of the Coesfeld district again since January 1, 1975.

Museums

Baumberger Sandstone Museum
Reinhold Holtstiege (1929–2011) in his radio museum

There are three museums of national importance in Havixbeck. The Baumberger Sandstone Museum shows the origin of the Baumberger sandstone and its 1000-year history. It also deals with the art of the Münsterland sculptors and stonemasons and their work with knots and chisels. In the summer months, the museum offers special sculpture courses for lay people.

The private broadcast museum Holtstiege of Havixbeck radio and television technician Reinhold Holtstiege (1929–2011) deals with the history of radio and television technology. The range of exhibits is unique in this form in Germany.

The Drostemuseum shows evidence from the life, especially from childhood, of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff . It is housed in the manor house of Hülshoff Castle , ancestral seat of the Droste zu Hülshoff family since 1417 .

Buildings

Burg Hülshoff , Haus Stapel and Haus Havixbeck are three of the many moated castles in the Münsterland in the Havixbeck area. In the town center, the gatehouse and St. Dionysius Church are witnesses of the Middle Ages. On the archway, traces of the fight on April 12, 1587, when Spanish soldiers were repulsed here, are still visible today. The Hohenholte collegiate church is also part of the Havixbeck community . On the road to Billerbeck is the Gothic Poppenbeck cross , which commemorates the death of the knight Swer von Bevern in 1487.

Parks

One attraction is the barefoot walk maintained by Tilbeck Abbey . Parks of this kind are intended to bring visitors closer to walking barefoot and, through this special kind of sensory experience, promote relaxation and well-being and contribute to reducing stress.

In the district of Hohenholte there is the yellow-black Hohenholte sports club (GSH for short). Almost every inhabitant of this district is a member of the sports club (840 members as of March 31, 2016), which has existed on a voluntary basis since 1974. Sports are soccer (seniors, juniors, women - the first senior team plays in the district league A Münster), gymnastics, dance, tennis, running and walking clubs, aikido and a group of small children.

music

With the brass orchestra of 1878 and the Havixbeck eV youth orchestra, which emerged from it in 1973, Havixbeck has two amateur wind orchestras that have already won several awards at international competitions. Under the former director Günther Mertens, the youth orchestra developed a privately organized but publicly supported musical training structure that is considered exemplary for many amateur ensembles in Germany. The Havixbeck Youth Orchestra is responsible for the Havixbeck Music School. In 1975 the newly founded Havixbeck Chamber Choir began its work. In 1976, the Havixbeck youth marching band was founded, which had many successes in the 1990s. Due to the changed age structure, the club has renamed itself Spielmannszug Havixbeck , but is still very active in musical youth work. The Hohenholte-Rockt! Festival has been held annually since 2007 . in Hohenholte. In 2011, the organizers established the Hohenholte Youth Culture Association. V. founded.
