Johann Wilhelm von Twickel (born July 19, 1682 in Havixbeck , † September 30, 1757 in Hildesheim ) was a privy councilor and auxiliary bishop of Hildesheim.

Life

Origin and family

Johann Wilhelm von Twickel was born the son of Christoph Bernhard von Twickel (1654–1719, Amtsdroste and privy councilor) and his wife Anna Franziska Sybilla Droste to Senden (1649–1730) and grew up with his brothers Ernst Friedrich , Jobst Matthias and Johann Rudolf in the ancient Westphalian noble family von Twickel .

Career and work

After studying at the Universities of Trier and Strasbourg , he was nominated for the cathedral chapter in 1706 and received a cathedral priest in Münster . After serving as a special envoy in Regensburg and Vienna in the summer of 1715, he received another prebend in Hildesheim in 1717 through papal commission . His ordination as a priest fell on July 18, 1717. On December 22, 1719 he was appointed Drost of the Poppenburg Office and on June 11, 1722 appointed to the Privy Council in Speyer. Two years later he was a deputy at the Münster Landscape Penny Chamber. At times, Johann Wilhelm was his brother Johann Rudolf's substitute for Droste in Rheine-Bevergern. The appointment as Vice-Dominus of the cathedral chapter of Münster fell on January 2, 1731. On June 27, 1735 he was appointed titular bishop of Arethusa and auxiliary bishop of Hildesheim. The consecration by Auxiliary Bishop Ferdinand Oesterhoff was on September 11th, 1735. On January 24th, 1742 he assisted the episcopate in the election of the emperor in Frankfurt. His work as auxiliary bishop was characterized by the fact that he - like his brother Ernst Friedrich - had to worry a lot about pastoral matters (uniform liturgy, cooperation between neighboring parishes) because the prince-bishop devoted himself to other things. Johann Wilhelm held many offices:

  • 1731 Provost of the Allerheiligenstift in Speyer
  • 1732–1734 archdeacon in Elze (Hildesheim)
  • 1734 archdeacon in Hildesheim (Hildesheim)
  • 1735 Cathedral Cantor Speyer
  • 1745 Apostolic Vicar for Upper and Lower Saxony,
  • 1749 governor and district president in the duchy of Hildesheim
  • 1755 Provost of St. Trinity in Speyer,
  • 1756 Hildesheim Cathedral Dean

Others

On October 14, 1755, Johann Wilhelm made his will and made his nephew Clemens August a universal heir. Like his brother, he is buried in Hildesheim Cathedral.
