Twickel is the name of an old Westphalian noble family with the parent company Twickeloe in the Twente countryside , which was located in the former upper monastery of Utrecht , today's province of Overijssel . Branches of the family still exist today.

history

Twickel Castle near Delden , Netherlands (owned by the family 1347–1580)

The family is said to have owned goods near Vreden as early as the 8th century . A Siegfried von Twickel is mentioned in 874. Egbert von Twickel, who died around 1300, left two sons. The family first appeared in documents in the diocese of Münster in 1302 with the brothers Rotcherus et Adolphus de Twiclo as miners. Eyerin von Twickel was the founder of the line to Vreden, which existed between 1340 and 1600. Hermann von Twiclo founded the line to Twickeloe on May 13, 1347 with the acquisition of the Eissing Hof, today's Twickel Castle near Delden . Her property was in Hof van Twente in what is now the Netherlands and was bequeathed to the von Raesfeld family in 1580 and to the Van Wassenaer in 1714 , who brought Twickel into a foundation in 1953.

The family held fast to Catholicism in the Reformed States General. A Rudolph von Twickel from this line married Emigardia von Bevern . The couple acquired the Havixbeck house , which has become the headquarters of the Havixbeck line to this day . Members of this line later acquired the Hameren house near Billerbeck through marriage .

A Johann von Twickel was an ensign in the troops of Bishop Franz von Waldeck when the Anabaptist Empire was broken up in Munster . He was involved in the storming of the city wall of Münster in 1535 . Later he entered the imperial Austrian service. In 1540 he married the heiress of the von Khaysel family from Styria.

Since 1635 the Twickel were heirs to the merged offices of Rheine and Bevergern . Johann Beyern von Twickel conquered Bevergern Castle in 1652 and drove the crew out of Holland. Johann Rudolph von Twickel served under Emperor Charles VI in 1723 . as Reichshofrat. Jobst (or Johann) Matthias von Twickel and Johann Wilhelm von Twickel were auxiliary bishops of Hildesheim . Baron Clemens August von Twickel was the Prince-Bishop of Munster, Chief Kitchen Master, and secret councilor and Drost of the Rheine and Bevergern offices . Carl von Twickel (* 1793) was the Prussian district administrator in Warendorf .

Since October 15, 1840, the Twickels were inheritance gifts from the Principality of Münster. In 1947 the Stolberg'sche Gut and the Westheim Brewery passed into Twickel's possession through marriage.
