Max Georg Freiherr von Twickel

Max Georg Freiherr von Twickel (born August 22, 1926 in Havixbeck , † November 28, 2013 in Mettingen ) was a German clergyman, auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Munster and official in the official district of Oldenburg.

Origin and family

He was the fifth of eight children of Rudolf Freiherr von Twickel (1893–1974) and his wife Margarete geb. Countess Droste zu Vischering (1896–1980). The father was a manor and estate owner in the Münsterland and a politically active Knight of Malta in the Catholic Center Party .

Career

Von Twickel studied theology in Münster from 1945 and in Innsbruck from 1948. On August 6, 1952, he was ordained a priest from Bishop Michael Keller . After pastoral work in the Holy Spirit in Recklinghausen and St. Josef in Neubeckum, he completed postgraduate studies in Innsbruck. In 1953 he became a chaplain in St. Stephanus in Beckum . From 1955 further studies followed in Innsbruck and Rome. In Innsbruck, he was in 1955 with the work The controversy over the definition of the Vatican for religious doubts to Dr. theol. PhD.

In 1959 he became president at the Collegium Heerde, religion teacher at the Ratsgymnasium in Münster and cathedral vicar at the cathedral church in Münster. In 1964 he became an additional assistant and lecturer at the Pedagogical University of Westphalia-Lippe , Department of Münster I. In 1967 von Twickel was appointed pastor at St. Felizitas in Lüdinghausen and dean in the dean's office in Lüdinghausen. In 1968 he also became district dean in the old district of Lüdinghausen.

In 1970 he was appointed Episcopal Official in Vechta and non-resident Cathedral Chapter by Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg . Pope Paul VI appointed him on January 18, 1973 titular bishop of Lugura and auxiliary bishop in Münster. Since then, the official for the Oldenburg part of the diocese has always been the regional bishop for this region. Together with Reinhard Lettmann and Ludwig Averkamp , he received the episcopal ordination of Bishop Heinrich Tenhumberg on February 24 of the same year . Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Heinrich Baaken and Laurenz Böggering . His motto was: "Largire clarum vespere" (Give light in the evening).

Shortly before reaching the age of 75, he was retired on July 6, 2001 as auxiliary bishop and official of the Oldenburg official district. He then lived at Gut Stovern in Salzbergen . Auxiliary Bishop von Twickel died on November 29, 2013 in Mettingen, and on December 7, he was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Vechta. Bishop Felix Genn praised him as a "good shepherd".

The “Caritas Social Fund Auxiliary Bishop Freiherr von Twickel” supports social issues in the Oldenburger Land.
