The former Benedictine abbey Saint-Nicaise is an abandoned building in the French city of Reims in the Marne department in the Grand Est region . The name of the Reims bishop and martyr Nicasius (5th century) now bears the Saint-Nicaise church, built in 1923 in the Chemin-Vert district in Reims, with furnishings by Maurice Denis and Gustave-Louis Jaulmes and leaded glass windows by René Lalique .

history

Position of the churches of Saint-Remi (10) and Saint-Nicaise (16)

The abbey church, which is considered to be one of the main works of Gothic architecture, was started by Hugues Libergier between 1231 and 1263 and completed by Robert de Coucy . The facade is handed down from an engraving by Nicolas de Son from 1625. In 1799 the abbey was demolished. The Taittinger champagne cellar is located on their premises today .

The abbey church was built on the site of a 4th century church of Saint-Agricole and Saint-Vital. St. Nicasius was buried there. and so the church became the traditional burial place of the bishops of the Gallo-Roman times. It was replaced in 1060 by a Benedictine institute for pilgrims. Although repaired many times, the church was very dilapidated after a short time.

The new building project began as a magnificent monastery church in 1229 or 1231 by Hugo Libergier and was completed in 1263 by Robert de Coucy . It was known as the "Sainte Chapelle de Reims" ( Holy Chapel of Reims ). For a long time it was considered one of the most beautiful churches in France and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
