history

The parish church of Nottuln
The town center planned by Schlaun

The traces of settlement in the Nottuln area reach up to around 4000 BC. BC back. In the 9th century, probably during the time of the first Münster bishop Liudger , a parish church was built in Nottuln , and thanks to the Martins patronage , an even earlier foundation is possible. The original name "Nutlon" probably means walnut wood or walnut wood . In the 11th century, after the forgeries of the chaplain Albert Wilkens in the 9th century, a women's monastery was established in Nottuln , in which Heriburg von Nottuln was venerated as a saint. Her coffin and her bones are exhibited in the Catholic Church in Nottuln.

In Nottuln, the “Abbey District” is located in the immediate vicinity of the parish church of St. Martinus and on the site of the former women's abbey . After the destruction by a fire in 1748, the district with the Ascheberger , the Ketteler and the Reckschen Kuria was rebuilt under the direction of the baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun , whereby the Baumberger sandstone was used as building material in prominent places . Even if Schlaun's plans could not be fully implemented, the monastery district still presents itself as an ensemble of baroque buildings. The parish church was also repaired after the fire and received a baroque dome in the form of an onion dome . The traditional Martinimarkt, a fair with a Krammarkt, still takes place around Martin's Day on November 11th in the Nottulner town center .

The parish church of St. Boniface in the district Schapdetten is one of the oldest Boniface - patrociniums in the Diocese of Münster . It was founded as a separate church of the Fulda monastery around 1122, but can only be proven in 1313.

The district of Darup , which emerged from a rural settlement, was first mentioned in 1188. The place is in the middle of the Münsterland (about 25 kilometers from Münster) on the edge of the Baumberge .

Uphoven, crucifix

The pilgrimage chapel "Zum Heiligen Kreuz" (1753/54) is located near the village. Inside there is a life-size crucifix made of sandstone on a tree cross (1718). This cross is still a place of pilgrimage for groups of pilgrims from the surrounding area. The history of Darup and its parish goes back to around the year 1000.

The church of Ss. Inside, Fabian and Sebastian hides a gem of medieval painting: the Darup Altar (around 1420). Today Darup is a district of Nottuln with around 2,100 inhabitants.

With the territorial reform of 1975, the previously independent municipality of Limbergen was spatially divided and partly incorporated into the city of Dülmen and partly into the municipality of Nottuln, which is also the legal successor to the municipality of Limbergen.

Limbergen with its farmers Hövel and Gladbeck still has the character of a rural settlement with numerous farmsteads, some of which are listed . For around 200 years, Limbergen had its own elementary school in Hövel and also a volunteer fire brigade with its own fire station , the tower of which is visible from afar. Since the school in Hövel was closed in the 1960s, the children have attended St. Sebastian Primary School in Darup. The successor to the Limbergen volunteer fire brigade was the Darup volunteer fire brigade, whereby the fire station in Limbergen was sold.

Administrative affiliation

Parishes

The area of the political community of Nottuln is identical to the area of the Catholic parish of St. Martin. The parish was formed in autumn 2009 from the following four previously independent parishes:

The parish church of the newly formed parish is St. Martinus in the Nottuln district. The other three churches are branch churches. In addition, the hospital chapel of the St. Gerburgis Hospital is used as a place of worship.

The Protestant Peace Parish covers the entire area of the political community of Nottuln and maintains two places of worship: the church “Under the Cross” in Nottuln and the “Friedenshaus” in Appelhülsen.

Denomination statistics

As of December 31, 2019, the confessions of the 20,192 inhabitants were: Roman Catholic 11,797 (58%) Protestant 3,098 (15%) and various 5,297 (26%)

Incorporations

As part of the municipal reorganization , which came into force on January 1, 1975, the municipality of Nottuln emerged from the formerly independent municipalities of Appelhülsen, Darup (mostly), Limbergen (partially), Nottuln and Schapdetten. The legal successor to the Nottuln office is the Nottuln municipality. Before that, Nottuln, with its apple pods and Schapdetten, belonged to the Münster district . The communities Darup and Limbergen belonged to the Amt Rorup and the Kreis Coesfeld until then . The city of Dülmen is the legal successor to the Rorup office .

Population development

Since the 1980s, several new residential areas have been developed, especially in the southwest of the Nottuln district (Lerchenhain, Fasanenfeld I, Olympiastraße to Niederstockumer Weg, "Am Hangenfeld", Fasanenfeld II and, most recently, Nottuln-Süd), and the number of residents rose sharply. Since the end of the 1990s, further housing development has been promoted in Appelhülsen, among other things because of the transport infrastructure (train station and motorway) and the associated better housing subsidy. A further building area (Hellerweg) has been developed here since 2010, in which almost all of the properties have been developed so far. In the district of Darup, there has also been an increase in the number of residents since the 1980s with the expansion and development of further building areas (Nieresch II, Sonnenstiege, Pfarrer-Kroos-Straße, Sister-Helma-Straße and von-Bönninghausen-Straße). New buildings were also built in Darup in a small private building area (Feldstiege) and in the "Schoppmanns Wiese" building area. In a decision of principle, the Nottuln municipality decided in 2006 to “promote further structural development in all districts of the municipality in order to maintain the existing infrastructure for the […] citizens in the future and moderate growth for the To enable districts ”(see Council minutes of December 12, 2006).

coat of arms

The right to use a coat of arms was granted to the municipality of Nottuln in 1937 by the then head president of the province of Westphalia. The coat of arms was approved by the Münster Regional Council in February 1983.

Blazon : "In red a silver saint Martin on horseback with a beggar, above in the golden head of a shield three green stalked hazelnuts placed in bars."

The veneration of this saint has a long tradition here. It is documented, among other things, by his patronage over the collegiate and parish church, by the existence of the St. Martini Brotherhood (founded in 1383) and by the annual Martini market in November (documented since 1622). Considerations of completely redesigning the coat of arms of today's Nottuln municipality and presenting all four districts in a special way were dropped after the first drafts were submitted. The council was unanimously of the opinion that St. Martin would also be a symbol of mutual understanding, consideration and trust for the citizens of the new community.

The hazelnuts in the head of the shield indicate the name of the municipality. This goes back to the names "Nuitlon" or "Nutlon", which are interpreted as "nut forest" or "nut trees".

Town twinning

The municipality of Nottuln has partnerships with the French city of Saint-Amand-Montrond (in the Cher department) (since 1984) and the Polish city of Chodzież ( Kolmar in German ) (since 1992).

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Road traffic

The community is located on the federal motorway 43 Wuppertal – Münster. Until 2002 the Autobahn 43 between Nottuln and Dülmen-Nord was developed as a makeshift motorway airport . It was able to be converted into a military airfield on this route within 24 hours. In addition, Federal Highway 525 crosses Nottuln .

Münster can be reached from Nottuln with the S60 express bus connection via the motorway. In addition, regional bus routes run via Schapdetten and Münster-Roxel to Münster and via Darup to Coesfeld . The city bus line C85 connects the main town of Nottuln with the train station in the Appelhülsen district.

Construction work for the Nottuln bypass on federal highway 525 began in February 2013. The official opening of the bypass took place on May 11, 2018. The 4.9 kilometer long road cost a total of 21.5 million euros.

The route for the Darup bypass was opened on September 22, 2009.

Rail transport

The train station in Appelhülsen. You can see the station building that still existed at the time

From the Appelhülsen train station on the Wanne-Eickel – Hamburg route, the Niers-Haard Express (RE 42) runs every 30 minutes in the direction of Münster or Essen . This connection is made every hour to Mönchengladbach . The historic station building built by the Cologne-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was badly damaged by Hurricane Kyrill in January 2007 and was therefore torn down shortly before Easter 2007.

Bicycle traffic

Nottuln is connected to the 100-Schlösser-Route long-distance cycle route .

media

Broadcasting system of the West German Broadcasting Corporation

The Nottuln transmitter , officially called Münster / Baumberge transmitter, is the location of a WDR transmission system for FM , DAB and DVB-T . It supplies the Münsterland with radio and television programs via antenna. Broadcasting began in 1952 and has been repeatedly adapted to the state of the art over the years. The last major measures were the renewal of the 182 meter high antenna support in 2005 and the introduction of digital television DVB-T in June 2007.

Peter Naumann , right-wing terrorist and now a politician of the NPD , blew up the two masts of the ARD station Koblenz (Dieblich-Naßheck) as well as the Longinusturm at the station Nottuln in 1979 while the documentary about the Holocaust Final Solution was being broadcast in order to broadcast it prevent. Around one hundred thousand televisions were affected. The bomb attack was one of the first right-wing terrorist acts in post-war Germany .
