Hermann Hidding

Hermann Johann Albert Hidding (born May 9, 1863 in Stevern near Nottuln , † February 8, 1925 in Potsdam ) was a German sculptor of historicism .

Life

Hidding is the son of a small farmer with many children from the Catholic Münsterland. He got to know the work of stonemasons through the nearby Baumberg quarry, which fascinated him very much. With the support of the Münsteraner Kunstverein and a state grant, Hidding trained as a stonemason from 1877 to 1881 with the sculptor Heinrich Fleige in Münster. He then studied with August Wittig at the Academy of Arts in Düsseldorf until 1886 . As a master student of Reinhold Begas , Hidding moved to Berlin in 1888.

Regular presence at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition made Hidding's works known to a broad public, and members of the imperial family also became aware of the young artist in 1897 through his relief March 9, 1888 (death of Kaiser Wilhelm I). The daughter of the late Emperor Grand Duchess Luise von Baden and Kaiser Wilhelm II bought marble versions of this relief. Around 1900 Hidding maintained numerous contacts with large industrialists, including Julius Friedrich Holtz , who gave him various orders.

Hidding's applications for the construction of large monuments were largely unsuccessful. When Duke Engelbert-Maria von Arenberg withdrew a major order for no reason in 1910, Hiddings had already laboriously completed the majority of the models. He then litigated the Duke unsuccessfully and only received compensation for the material costs. Disappointed, he withdrew from public art life. He moved to Werder near Potsdam. After the First World War he became increasingly impoverished.
