Bretleben is on the right bank of the Unstrut between the towns of Heldrungen and Artern . At the height of Bretleben, the Unstrut flows between the Kyffhäuser Mountains and the Hohe Schrecke ridge through the very fertile valley of the Diamantenen Aue and changes direction a few kilometers away, coming from the southwest, to the southeast.
history
At the beginning of the 9th century Bretleben is in a directory of the Patrimony of the Archbishop Lull (Archbishop of Mainz) Lull († 786), built by Mainz monastery Hersfeld as Bretalaho mentioned. On May 13, 1304 ( in the Sancti Servacii ) the cousins Friedrich and Friedrich von Heldrungen left the church patronage in Brettla and Bernsdorf (desolate near Reinsdorf ) to the Domui fratrum Lazaritanum in Braunsroda . On March 21, 1313, Pope Clemens V confirmed to the commander and the brothers of the Kommende Braunsroda that Friedrich Herr zu Heldrungen had given them the right of patronage to the Church of St. Johannis zu Brethla . In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the place, usually referred to as Bretla , belonged to the Heldrungen office .
On January 1, 2019, the communities of Bretleben, Gorsleben , Hauteroda , Heldrungen , Hemleben and Oldisleben merged to form the new town and country community of An der Schmücke. The municipality of Bretleben belonged to the administrative community An der Schmücke .
