Sachsenburg is located directly at the Thuringian Gate , which is just under 500 meters wide , the breakthrough of the Unstrut through the ridges of the Hainleite and the Schmücke at a height of about 130 meters. The Wipper flows into the Unstrut near Sachsenburg .

History and sights

Due to the strategic location at the Thuringian Gate , castles were built in early times to monitor the traffic route from Erfurt to Magdeburg . Thus, in the 12th century, the Lower Sachsenburg was built above the village, which was first mentioned in 1132, followed by the Upper Sachsenburg in the 13th century .

In 1680 Sachsenburg was affected by one of the last witch trials in the course of the witch hunt, whereby the old woman Anna Marie Glade was sentenced to death and judged and burned on the so-called Hexenwiese below the castles by the Arterner executioner Martin Kaufmann on December 17, 1680. Sachsenburg was the main town of the Saxon Electoral Office of Sachsenburg until 1815 . The decisions of the Congress of Vienna led to Prussia and in 1816 the county Eckartsberga in the administrative district of Merseburg of the Province of Saxony assigned to which it belonged until the 1944th In 1974 Sachsenburg was incorporated into Oldisleben.

traffic

The federal highway 85 (to Bad Frankenhausen and Weimar ) and the federal highway 86 (to Erfurt and Sangerhausen ) as well as the Sangerhausen – Erfurt railway line run through Sachsenburg and the Thuringian Gate . The next train station is two kilometers north of Sachsenburg near Heldrungen .
