The Thuringian Gate is the name given to the breakthrough of the Unstrut near Sachsenburg in Thuringia .

Here, the river breaks through the Hainleite and Schmücke mountain ranges that close the Thuringian Basin to the north .

The topographical conditions created by the Unstrut have always been used by traffic. The federal highway 85 , the federal highway 86 and the Sangerhausen – Erfurt railway line run through the Thuringian Gate. In the Middle Ages, the Thuringian Gate was guarded by the Upper Sachsenburg and the Lower Sachsenburg .
