natural reserve
On April 30, 2013, the area of the western Schmücke, south of Heldrungen, with the adjacent forests and southern slopes, was placed under nature protection. This also includes parts of the communities of Heldrungen, Oberheldrungen, Gorsleben and Hemleben. The nature reserve has an area of around 550 hectares.
The landscape is dominated by a loose assortment of dry and semi-dry grasslands , meadows , clearance cairns , bushes , orchards and woods - and arable areas. Medieval excavation pits run along the ridge of the ridge. Due to the size and diversity of the different heat- and dry-loving biotopes as well as their rarity, a large number of animals and plants that have adapted to these dry conditions are offered habitats, which is particularly true for wild bees , grasshoppers and butterflies , among others . In winter the pug bats find the necessary shelter here, which is why the area is currently the largest known hibernation area for this bat species in Thuringia.
Day trippers and hikers prefer the Schmücke because of its beauty and the extraordinary views over the Thuringian basin. In the future, hiking and cycling on the existing paths as well as riding on marked bridle paths will be made possible. Ultimately, the area can be used by farmers , foresters and hunters .
