geography

Burgwend lies embedded between the mountain ranges of Monraburg , Wendenburg (354 m) and Finnberg at the southern exit of a pass through the Schmücke and Hohe Schrecke . The Hirschbach runs through the village .

history

Abandoned quarry on Finnberg

The settlement of the landscape around Burgwend is documented by numerous finds from the Neolithic period, the concentration of finds indicates settlements of the band ceramists . The Monraburg , one of the largest prehistoric ramparts on the northern edge of the Thuringian Basin, was built at a strategically important location . To the northwest it was supplemented by the Wendenburg in the early Middle Ages . Both fortifications secured the densely populated area (old settlement area and traditional center of power of the Thuringian Kingdom) and at the same time an old road that ran over the Finne Pass.

The place was first mentioned by name as Burchiegen on October 26, 1264. As early as the 10th century, the surrounding area with Großmonra was donated to the St. Peter's Abbey in Mainz . The place name “Burgwend” can be related to the settlement of Wenden near the castle.

From the ecclesiastical property Burgwend came around 1500 to the Count of Beichlingen, then the von Werthern family . From the beginning of the 20th century until the Second World War, Burgwend was a well-visited climatic health resort, with five inns and numerous guest houses. From the 1950s to the beginning of the 1990s, the "Hohen Schrecke" was a restricted military area of the Soviet Army . During the GDR era, the western part of the Finnberg site north-east of Burgwend was used as a quarry; the machine-processed material was used to manufacture building materials, including cement-based hollow blocks. The remainder of the mountain is now a nature reserve .

On July 1, 1950, Burgwend was incorporated into the community of Großmonra. On December 31, 2012, the place was incorporated into the city of Kölleda together with the community of Großmonra, to which it belonged.
