Monraburg is 377  m above sea level. NN high mountain of the mountain range Schmücke with a prehistoric and early historical ramparts near Großmonra in the district of Sömmerda in Thuringia .

geography

The Monraburg is located at 377  m above sea level. NN north above the town of Großmonra in the vicinity of the Künzelsberg , the highest elevation of the Schmücke mountain range . At the exit of the Großmonra district of Burgwend , the Wendenburg rises to the left . This is followed by the Monraburg ridge with the remarkable remains of the prehistoric and early historical ramparts . The crossroads below the elevation leads to the right to the Kammerforst and to the left, rising steeply to the Monraburg and on to the Künzelsberg.

Natural division

According to the classification of the Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology , the ridge belongs to the natural area Hohe Schrecke – Schmücke – Finn of the southern Unstrut mountain and hill country (south-east part) within the red sandstone hill country.

Prehistoric and early historical ramparts

North of the village Großmonra was the prehistoric and Wallburg Monraburg . The Bronze Age ramparts were probably re-fortified by the Franks during the Merovingian Age .

use

The ridge with the castle ruins ("quarry") - a protected ground monument - on its wooded plateau is used for agriculture and forestry today and is freely accessible to visitors.
