Hans Rudolph (ancient historian)

Hans Wilhelm Thilo Rudolph (born May 18, 1907 in Burgwendi , † August 26, 1980 in Bühl (Baden) ) was a German ancient historian .

Hans Rudolph attended the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin . He first studied law, then history, classical philology and philosophy. He received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1932 with a thesis on Roman urbanism in Italy. In 1937 he succeeded Erich Ziebarth on the chair of ancient history at Hamburg University , initially as a temporary university lecturer. After joining the NSDAP in 1937 , he was appointed associate professor in 1939. In 1941 he became a full professor and in 1975 he retired. His academic students included Friedrich Karl Kienitz , Harald Vocke , Peter Herrmann , Christian Habicht , Bernd-Jürgen Wendt , Eberhard Ruschenbusch and Joachim Molthagen . He died of a heart condition in 1980 while on a spa stay.
