Dietrich Hoffmann (ancient historian)

Dietrich Hoffmann (born April 7, 1929 in Basel ) is a Swiss ancient historian .

Dietrich Hoffmann received his doctorate in 1958 from the University of Basel with a thesis on The Late Roman Moving Army and the Notitia dignitatum . During his student days he joined the Swiss Zofingerverein . When a third professorship for Ancient History was created at the University of Hamburg in the course of the university's restructuring in the 1970s , this C-2 professorship was filled with Dietrich Hoffmann. He taught as a professor in Hamburg from 1978 to September 1994.
