Helmut Halfmann

Helmut Halfmann (born January 21, 1950 in Geilenkirchen ) is a German ancient historian .

After graduating from high school in Bonn in 1968, he studied history and Latin there and in Bochum. After the first state examination in 1975, he became a research assistant at the Department of Ancient History at Heidelberg University . There he received his doctorate in 1977 with a thesis supervised by Géza Alföldy . After completing his doctorate, he worked as a research assistant in Münster. Halfmann completed his habilitation in 1984 and took over a professorship at the University of Münster in 1986 . In 1991 he changed to a chair at the University of Hamburg as successor to Peter Herrmann . In October 1995 he turned down an offer for a C 4 professorship at the University of Münster. Halfmann was visiting professor at the University of Bordeaux III from October 1999 to February 2000 . For 2015 he was awarded the Ausonius Prize for his achievements in the field of Roman history and digital humanities . In 2015 he retired. His successor at the University of Hamburg in Ancient History was Kaja Harter-Uibopuu .

Halfmann's work focuses on the history and epigraphy of Asia Minor in Roman times , the prosopography of the Roman ruling class and geographical information systems. In 2011, he presented a relevant biography of the triumvir Marcus Antonius .
