The Schmücke tunnel is a road tunnel in Thuringia with two tubes. In relation to the route axis, it has an average length of 1725 m. As part of the A 71 motorway , between the Heldrungen and Kölleda junctions , it crosses under the Schmücke ridge . Construction began in 2005 and on December 12, 2008 the structure was opened to traffic after a test phase. The tunnel sponsor was Katharina Althaus, the wife of the then Thuringian Prime Minister Dieter Althaus . The total cost of the tunnel was 85 million euros.
construction
The west tube is 1,729.46 m long and the east tube is 1,720.81 m long. The maximum cover of the tunnel is 65 m. Each tube has a clearance height of 4.5 m and a clearance width of 9.5 m, which is divided into two 3.5 m wide lanes, edge strips of 0.25 m and emergency walkways on both sides of 1.0 m wide. In each tube there are two breakdown bays at a distance of 575 m. The directional lanes are connected to one another by passable connecting tunnels. There are also three additional cross tunnels at a distance of 575 m. The tubes are ventilated lengthways by jet fans .
Geology and construction
The geology of the wooded ridge is characterized by rock layers of varying strength and steepness, with sometimes strong local water inflows and a geological fault zone. Among other things , red sandstone , red and shell limestone with a mountain water level of up to 25 m water column and Keuper are passed through. A groundwater lowering occurs in areas.
The tunnel was excavated with 105 to 147 m² of excavated cross-sectional area using blasting or mechanically, with shotcrete lining with cross-section subdivision into dome, bench and bottom according to the new Austrian tunnel construction method. The two tubes were tackled in parallel from both portals. 375,000 m³ of excavated material was produced.

The tunnel is the first in Germany to be completely illuminated with white LEDs.
