The Hochwald tunnel is a road tunnel in Thuringia with a length of 1056 m and, along with the Alte Burg , Rennsteig and Berg Bock tunnels, is part of the chain of tunnels that cross the ridge of the Thuringian Forest .

As part of the federal motorway 71 , between the Oberhof and Suhl / Zella-Mehlis junctions , it crosses the ridge of the high forest east of Zella-Mehlis. The north portal begins directly after the Oberhof junction. The tunnel has a constant gradient of 0.5% towards the south. Construction began in 1998 and the tunnel breakthrough a year later. In November 2001 it was released for traffic. The tunnel sponsor was Gisela Huber, the wife of DEGES supervisory board chairman Jürgen Huber. The total cost of the tunnel was approximately 27 million euros.

construction

The tunnel tubes have a length of 1056 m with a mutual distance of about 25 m. Each tube has a clearance height of 4.5 m and a clearance width of 9.5 m, which is divided into two 3.5 m wide lanes, edge strips of 0.25 m and emergency walkways on both sides of 1.0 m wide. The directional lanes are connected by two cross tunnels 360 m apart. The tunnel was built using blasting and shotcrete using the new Austrian tunneling method . The maximum cover is 45 m. The tubes were driven in parallel from the southern portals . The standard cross-sectional area is 80.5 m², at the Oberhof junction the cross-section for the threading-in and threading-out track is widened. 185,000 cubic meters of excavated material accumulated. The tubes are ventilated lengthways by eight jet fans in each tube.
