The Viehkogel is a mountain in the Steinerne Meer in the Berchtesgaden Alps on the border between Bavaria and Austria . It is 2158 m high and is located in the west-central part of the plateau of the Stone Sea. The special charm of the Viehkogel results from the fact that it is an island mountain that offers a clear view on all sides. Due to its low height, however, the view is limited to the Stone Sea itself; other mountains such as the Hohe Tauern are not visible. Furthermore, higher mountains obscure the direct view of sunrise (covered by the Funtenseetauern ) and sunset (covered by the summit ridge between Breithorn and Schindlköpf ).
The Viehkogel is usually climbed from the Kärlingerhaus on the Funtensee , from where a path takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to walk to the summit. Despite the markings and consistently good visibility, it is a demanding hiking trail, as there are very steep places with a risk of slipping, especially on the summit slope. Experienced mountaineers can descend from the summit of the Viehkogel directly to the Funtensee. This descent is not as extreme as it looks from above and leads - avoiding the steepest walls on the left - through grassy slopes and mountain pine terrain .
