Saint-Amand-Montrond is a French city with 9437 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Cher department in the Center-Val de Loire region and the capital of the arrondissement of the same name , which is part of the three arrondissements that make up the Cher department is the most sparsely populated.

geography

The city is located on the eastern bank of the Cher River , which separates it from the parish of Orval, to which it is connected by two bridges across the river. In the middle of the urban area, the Marmande river flows into the Cher as a right tributary. The former canal Canal de Berry branches off from the Cher valley here and follows the Marmande to the east.

Way of St. James

Saint-Amand-Montrond is located on the southern Via Lemovicensis (French: Voie limousine or Voie de Vézelay ). This is the Latin name of one of the four Camino de Santiago in France . In 1998, UNESCO named these historic “ Paths of the Pilgrims of St. James in France ” a World Heritage Site .
