Saint-Jeanvrin is a French commune with 152 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Cher department in the Center-Val de Loire region .

Saint-Jeanvrin is located in central France in the southwest of the Cher department, about 50 kilometers southwest of the city of Bourges , 25 kilometers southwest of Saint-Amand-Montrond , the seat of the sub-prefecture of the Arrondissements , and 4.5 kilometers northeast of Châteaumeillant , the capital of the Cantons and the community association Communauté de communes Berry Grand Sud , at an average altitude of 236 meters above sea ​​level . The Mairie stands at a height of 223 meters. Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Jeanvrin are Beddes in the west, Le Châtelet in the northeast, Saint-Maur in the east and Châteaumeillant in the southwest. The municipality has an area of ​​1753 hectares. To the east of the town center are two ponds that were created in the 13th century by the local seigneurs . The landscape is dominated by Bocage .

history

Originally, Saint-Jeanvrin was part of Beddes. The church of Saint-Georges was first mentioned in 1115 in a papal bull as the church of Saint-Jeanvrin. It was subordinate to the Abbey of Déols . Saint-Jeanvrin was a fiefdom whose first Seigneur was Guillaume Espinaz. Towards the end of the 12th century, the fiefdom of the Seigneurie of Le Châtelet came under. In the 16th century, the village had 44 statistical fireplaces for calculating the tax (feu fiscal) , which corresponds to around 220 inhabitants. At the end of the 18th century there were 74 feu fiscal , i.e. about 370 inhabitants.

During the French Revolution (1789-1799) the community was called Bord.

In the second quarter of the 19th century, wine was grown in the hamlets of Peuteloup and les Vignes . In the second half of the 19th century, the introduction of mixed culture instead of monoculture resulted in better crop yields, which resulted in the community growing. From 1806 to 1881 the population increased from 550 to 716. 55 new houses were built between 1861 and 1891. In the last quarter of the 19th century a railway line was built connecting Châteaumeillant with La Guerche . The route is now closed and the rails have disappeared. The gatekeeper's house is still standing in Saint-Jeanvrin .

This 12th century capital shows birds with their necks folded.

Originally the main patron saint of the church was Januarius (Janvier), today it is Saint George . In the last quarter of the 15th century, the Blanchefort family had the buttresses of the nave reinforced and the windows of the apse and the two chapels enlarged. A window from this period has been preserved in the apse. In 1792 the church tower collapsed and its former location was covered with tiles. In 1852 a new church tower was built. The roofs were restored in 1905 but do not match the original roofs. The building was classified as a Monument historique in 1911 . Five capitals from the 12th century were also classified as Monument historique in 1911 . They show people, dragons, fire, lions and birds and are also decorated with floral ornaments.
