Ainay-le-Vieil is located about 50 kilometers south-southeast of Bourges on the Cher , which borders the municipality in the north and east. Ainay-le-Vieil is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Drevant and Colombiers in the north, Coust in the east and northeast, Lételon in the east, La Perche in the south and southeast, La Celette in the south and west, and Saint-Georges-de-Poisieux and La Groutte in the north-west.
