Joyce Sombroek (born September 10, 1990 in Alkmaar ) is a Dutch hockey player who was Olympic champion in 2012 and world champion in 2014.

Career

The 1.79 m tall Joyce Sombroek made her debut for the Dutch national team in 2010 . The goalkeeper won her first international medal at the 2010 World Cup in Rosario when the Netherlands lost to Argentina in the final . At the 2011 European Championships in Mönchengladbach , the Dutch women met the host nation's team in the final. The Dutch won the title with a 3-0 win over the German team . In 2012 Joyce Sombroek received a gold medal at the Olympic Games in London , in the final, the Dutch defeated the Argentine world champions 2-0. Sombroek was used in seven games.

In 2013 at the European Championships in Boom, the Dutch lost to the British in the penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals , and the Dutch won the game for third place against the Belgian hosts 3-1. The following year, the Netherlands hosted the World Cup in The Hague . In the final, the Dutch beat the Australians 2-0. The World Hockey Association named Joyce Sombroek goalkeeper of the year for her achievements in the 2014 season and especially at the World Cup . At the 2015 European Championships in London, the Dutch lost to the British in the shootout in the final. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , the Dutch team reached the final once again, as in the previous year they lost to the British in the shootout. Sombroek appeared in eight games. In 2017 Joyce Sombroek announced her departure from the national team after 117 international matches because of problems with her hip.

Joyce Sombroek began her career at Lochemse HC, then played for Schaerweijde and finally switched to MHC Laren.
