The municipality of Altenberge is located approx. 14 km northwest of the university town of Münster in the Steinfurt district in the midst of the Münsterland parkland . The community is located on the Altenberger ridge and is the highest located community in the Altkreis Burgsteinfurt (BF). The highest point is the Paschhügel ( 119  m above sea  level ). The lowest point is at the confluence of the Landwehrbach and the Steinfurter Aa just under 4 km west of the center of the village (68 m above sea level). Another prominent point is the Krüsellinde about 800 m southeast of the church of Altenberge (110 m above sea level), Altenberge borders (clockwise, starting in the east) on Greven (Steinfurt district), Münster (district), Havixbeck ( Coesfeld district ) , Billerbeck (Coesfeld district), Laer (Steinfurt district), Steinfurt (Steinfurt district) and Nordwalde (Steinfurt district).

structure

The Altenberge community consists of Altenberge and six farmers :

Entrup
In terms of area, Entrup is the largest farming community in Altenberge.
Aerial view of the Hansell farmers
Hansell
Hansell was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century and has almost 300 inhabitants. It is the only one of the Altenberg farming communities that does not border the Altenberg town center and is located between Münster-Nienberge, Greven and Altenberge. In addition, Hansell has a settlement center around the church of St. Johannes Nepomuk , which was an independent parish until 2009. After a completed merger, it is now the branch church of the parish of St. Johannes Baptist . In Hansell, agriculture, cattle breeding, tourism and the lively club life in the shooting club "An De Buorg" and in the kfd characterize the place.
Hohenhorst
A hill in the south of Hohenhorst is called Rösteberg . According to a local legend, this is where the giant Grinkenschmied lived. The sandstone that was used to restore Münster's cathedral after the Second World War was also quarried in Hohenhorst .
Care
The Kümper peasantry is not only the smallest in terms of area, it is also the least populated peasantry with 269 people. Kümper is hardly mentioned historically; on October 28, 1842, it was awarded to the "Amt Altenberge" as the peasantry was never a sovereign office or parish. Kümper has seen a sharp decline in space for many years, as the West industrial park is expanding ever deeper into the peasantry. Sights in Kümper include the Geuker-Wiedemann grain distillery, the tractor and tractor museum on the former premises of the H. Wesseler OHG tractor factory .
Whale troop
The “Madonna der Landstrasse”, a chapel for travelers on the L 510 between Altenberge and Münster, is a sight built in 1953. An average of 70 candles a day burned in the Waltrup Chapel in 2007, a total of 28,400. 12324.88 euros were collected in the offering box. : The Hollenbeck farming community was mentioned in a document as early as 1142 in the Hohenholte founding deed.
Westenfeld
One of the sights in Westenfeld is the Bödding house on the Kintrup farm. The knights of "Oldenberge" used to live on the old Gräfthof. Only the gatehouse and the moats are preserved from the original complex. The farm has been owned by the Kintrup family since 1899. Another attraction is the Göverding estate from the 15th century, which has been completely preserved to this day.

history

The parish of Altenberge was first mentioned in a document in 1181, but the place was probably created long before that. The place probably already existed at the time of the first bishop of Munster, Liudger (742-809). Charlemagne had entrusted missionary work in western Saxony to him in 792 . Liudger built the later diocese of Münster ; During this time, numerous parishes were founded and churches were built, probably also in Altenberge. The place was originally part of the Free County of Münster im Dreingau and was under the administration of the Knights of Altenberge in the 12th century.

Altenberge was largely spared from the destruction in World War II .

politics

town hall

Municipal council

The Altenberge municipal council consists of 26 council members and the mayor. The local elections on May 25, 2014 , with a turnout of 66.6%, led to the following result (for comparison the values of the 2009 election are also given):

Party / list Seats 2014 Share of votes in 2014 Seats 2009 Share of votes in 2009
CDU 14th 52.2% 13 49.9%
SPD 5 21.1% 4th 16.9%
Green 5 18.4% 4th 13.7%
UWG 2 8.3% 3 10.4%

The CDU thus holds more than half of the possible seats and, together with the vote of Mayor Jochen Paus (CDU; confirmed in office in 2014 with 79.4% of the votes cast), has a majority in the municipal council (15:12) over the other parliamentary groups . The CDU has thus held the majority of the votes in the local council since the first free elections in Altenberge. The CDU is the largest local party, followed by the SPD, the Greens and the UWG. Right-wing or left-wing radical parties do not play a role in Altenberge, in the past elections at the federal, municipal or state level, there were only single-digit votes for both sides.

mayor

Jochen Paus became mayor in 2004. He was re-elected in 2009 and 2014.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Altenberge was awarded in 1938. It shows the so-called Krüsellinde, the coat of arms tree of the community and former place of justice on the old Münsterweg. This stands on a three-mountain, which symbolizes the Altenberger ridge on which the place is located. The ploughshare on the Dreiberg represents the population of the place, which in the past consisted mainly of farmers.

Blazon : "On a golden field a red three-mountain covered with a golden ploughshare, on which a green linden tree stands."

Community partnerships

A partnership has existed since 1979 with the Belgian municipality of Gooik , which is 25 km west of Brussels in the province of Flemish Brabant . Gooik is only slightly smaller than Altenberge with around 8,850 inhabitants. In 1990, 1999 and 2009 the partnership between the communities was confirmed in festive ceremonies. The Altenberg Gooik Committee takes care of the continuation of the partnership. In 2009 the municipalities were awarded the European Diploma by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in recognition and appreciation of the partnership.

Attractions

Catholic Parish Church of St. John Baptist

Altenberge is probably one of the original parishes that were founded by Bishop Liudger around 800 . The first three bays of the church date from the middle of the 14th century. Furthermore, the church was extended by a yoke to Western between 1882 and 1884 and the former square medieval tower was replaced by the current one. The interior of the church is reminiscent of the Lamberti or Überwasserkirche in Münster . The Catholic Church can also be seen as the landmark of Altenberge, as the 75 m high tower is visible from a great distance.

Catholic branch church St. Johannes Nepomuk

Krüsellinde

The Krüsellinde in the southeast is the heraldic tree of Altenberge. The Westphalian Femgerichte used to be held here. As symbols of former remote courts, the rope and sword still lie under the tree.

Ice cellar

Glance into the Altenberge ice cellar

This ice cellar belongs to the former Altenberg brewery Beuing . The exact date of construction is not known, but the northern part of the cellar was added around 1890. Here the brewed beer could be stored cool during the summer . For this purpose, ice blocks were extracted from so-called ice ponds in the surrounding fields and brought into the ice cellar. So the vault stayed at a temperature of 8 to 10 degrees even in summer. With the bankruptcy of the brewery in 1927, the use of the ice cellar ended for the time being and the vault was forgotten. It was not until 1996 that the ice cellar was rediscovered during construction work for the neighboring primary school. In 2004 an information pavilion was built for the regional and walkways were laid in the basement. The cellar can be viewed today through the Heimatverein.

Heimathues "Kittken"

The core of this half-timbered house was built before 1840, and was expanded in 1910. From 1889 the house served as the living room of the village policeman and as a detention center. It retained this function until the 1930s. In the 1990s the building was restored by the Heimatverein and inaugurated as the Heimathaus on May 10, 1997. Later a cottage garden was laid out on the site, a typical granary (2003) and a bakery (2006) were built. The warehouse was owned by the Hohenhorst farmers until 2003 and was then dismantled by the local history association and rebuilt at its current location.

Marketplace

Market square with fountain in the foreground

The market square is the center of community life in Altenberge. It was created at the end of the 1980s when the Schmitz Cargobull company, which was then still based in the town, moved to a site outside the town. The square was built on part of the area freed as a result. The houses on the sides should be reminiscent of the Prinzipalmarkt in Münster with their facades and gables (albeit greatly simplified and modernized) . In addition to the church square, the market square is mainly used for events such as village festivals or concerts. A weekly market takes place here every Wednesday.

Old Cemetery (Memorial)

The old cemetery is in the center of the village near the Catholic parish church of St. John Baptist. The site became too small at the beginning of the last century, so a new cemetery was created between Hanseller Strasse and Bahnhofshügel. Only a few tombstones have remained in the old cemetery. In the middle of the lawn is the memorial, which commemorates the Altenbergers who fell and went missing in the world wars.

Chapel "Madonna der Landstrasse"

The chapel was built in 1953 by the Grinkenschmidt shooting club in Waltrup in memory of the members who died in the war. It is located directly on the former B 54 (today L 510) between Altenberge and Münster and was therefore given the name "Madonna der Landstrasse".

House Sieverding

From the Sieverding house built in 1661 , a former water system, only the storage facility has been preserved today. It houses the study fund of the University of Münster.

Gut Göverding

One of the oldest buildings in Altenberge is the farmhouse on Gut Göverding , which is believed to date from the 15th century. At first it was the seat of the Göverding family, the owners changed several times over the years until it was taken over by the Große Brinkhaus family in 1901 and has been in the family ever since.

Zurholt Fossils and Stone Museum

The Zurholt Fossil and Stone Museum shows numerous finds that were discovered on the Altenberg ridge. The museum is privately owned. Among other things, the supposedly largest coherent find of belemnites in Europe can be seen in the museum . It was discovered during excavation work in a rainwater retention basin.

Altenberge tractor and equipment museum

In the premises of the former farm tractor factory Heinr. Wesseler OHG , a museum for agricultural equipment and machines and for agricultural tractors was set up. The sponsoring association of the museum was founded in 2003. In 2010 the former production facility for Wesseler tugs was listed as a historical monument.

Landwehr

To the west and south of the community, the remains of the old Landwehr are still preserved today.
