Life

Vorgrimler studied theology and philosophy in Freiburg i. Br. And Innsbruck . In 1953 he was ordained a priest. In 1958 he received his doctorate under Karl Rahner in the subject of dogmatics . Subsequently, Vorgrimler became the most important collaborator on the ten-volume encyclopedia for theology and church published by Rahner, and later editor for the three-volume commentary on the resolutions of the Second Vatican Council . On behalf of Pope Paul VI. he conducted dialogue with Freemasons . In 1968 he became a professor of dogmatics at the Lucerne State Theological Faculty .

From 1968 to 1974 he worked for Cardinal Franz König in the Vatican Secretariat for the Unbelievers. From 1972 to 1994 he was full professor for dogmatics and the history of dogma at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster; his teacher Rahner held this chair until 1971. Vorgrimler served the faculty in Münster for many years as dean and managing director of the theological seminars.

Vorgrimler was consultor of the Papal Secretariat for the Non-Believers, whose main task is the dialogue with atheism ; with Rahner he was the editor of the International Dialogue Journal , which, under his editorship, developed into a forum for critical dialogue between Christianity and Marxism , theism , theology and sociology as well as philosophy and political science ; it was an extremely important publication for the scientific dialogue between East and West.

Since his retirement in 1994, Vorgrimler has devoted himself to pastoral tasks in addition to his academic work. He worked voluntarily as a clinic pastor in the Clemenshospital in Münster.

Teaching and publications

In his teaching, Vorgrimler consistently endeavored to explain and continue Rahner's theology. In his successor Vorgrimler operated a theology that dealt intensively with the Second Vatican Council . Vorgrimler was co-editor of the complete works by Rahner and edited several volumes in this series.

Quite a few of his numerous books have become standard theological works, such as the Small Theological Dictionary , the Small Council Compendium (35th edition published in 2008), the volume on the sacraments of penance and anointing of the sick in the handbook of the history of dogma, his books on the doctrine of God and theology of the sacraments and the theology of death. In 1993 his extensive work on the history of hell was published . Most of his books have been published in multiple editions. The Oros publishing house in Altenberge has been publishing its essays and lectures since 1997; under the title Wegsuche. Small writings on theology have appeared in two volumes.
