Metelen ( Low German Maideln ) is a municipality in the Steinfurt district , North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany .
geography
The municipality of Metelen is located in the Münsterland park landscape , which is characterized by a contrast of sandy soils and wetlands. The Vechte flows through the village .

The peasant communities Naendorf and Samberg belong to Metelen.

Metelen borders on Ochtrup , Steinfurt , Horstmar , Schöppingen and Heek .
history
The imperial monastery or Abbey of Metelen , founded in 889, strongly shaped the development of the community in the Middle Ages and the early modern period up to secularization at the beginning of the 19th century. A village gradually developed around the monastery, and in 1337 there was already a market. In 1591 the place was surrounded by a wall and moat; four gates allowed entry. The textile industry has played a decisive economic role since the 17th century. This period came to an end in 1973 with the closure of the last textile factory.
On April 1, 1938, the community was through the merger of the municipalities Wigbold Metelen and parish Metelen reformed.

Table tennis
The association TTV Metelen , founded in 1946, became German table tennis champion in 1959 , and a year later it was runner-up. The players in the championship team were: Josef Wenninghoff (Metelen), Horst Langer (Metelen), Klemens Tietmeyer (Metelen), Hugo Kramer (Ochtrup), Paul Hegemann (Metelen), Jürgen Langer (Metelen) and Hermann Wiedau (Metelen). From 1969 to 1973 TTV played in the table tennis Bundesliga for five years . Relegation in 1973 was followed by relegation a year later, but the class could not be held.
In the 2011/2012 season, TTV Metelen plays in the Association League Group 4 of the West German Table Tennis Association (WTTV).
Vaulting
The Vaulting Association Metelen e. V. has eight teams, the second team of which is represented in the highest performance class S. In 2009 the first team of VV Metelen were guests at the M-Teamcup and the 5-country comparison competition. In 2008 they won the district championship in Wettringen.
Soccer
FC Matellia 08 Metelen was founded in 1908. Currently the 1st senior team plays in the district league A of the Steinfurt district.
tennis
The TC Metelen 64 eV was founded in 1964. There are currently 6 senior teams registered, which play their home games on the club grounds in the Metelener Heide.

SK Metelen was founded in 1946. The first team plays in the regional league of the Münsterland chess association.
traffic
The Metelen Land stop outside the town is on the Münster – Enschede railway line and is served by the RB64 line every half hour . The Metelen Land Railway Museum is also located there . Metelen is also integrated into the Westfalenbus- Gesellschaft's route network. The federal road 70 ( Leer - Wesel ), which also creates a connection to the A 30 (connection Rheine Nord), runs through the village . There is a citizen bus that runs every 120 minutes. drives within the community and to Wettringen and Schöppingen . Metelen is also on the Aa-Vechte-Route cycle path (leads to Steinfurt, Laer and Bad Bentheim, among others).
On the Burgsteinfurt – Borken line , which was dismantled at the end of the 1980s, there was the Metelen Ort station .
In addition, Metelen is on the federal highway 54 and is connected to Gronau (Westf.) Gronau , Ochtrup , Burgsteinfurt , Altenberge , Nordwalde and Münster .

- In two Catholic kindergartens, St. Josef and St. Marien and a Protestant kindergarten in the former elementary school, as well as the DRK Kindergarten Zwergenburg , children of preschool age are looked after and supported.
- An elementary school, the St. Vitus Elementary School, is the educational offer in the community.
- The music school and the adult education center are supported by an association of the municipalities of Metelen, Neuenkirchen, Ochtrup and Wettringen.
- The Metelen e. V. (KIM) promotes cultural institutions and cultural workers and their cooperation in Metelen and the surrounding area and organizes cultural events itself.

Honorary citizen
- Hans Tietmeyer (1931–2016), President of the Bundesbank (1993–1999), honorary citizen of the Metelen community. Since 1998 the restored Tendyck house, today a meeting place of the Metelen home association, has been called "Ackerbürgerhaus Hans Tietmeyer".
