Life

Anne Focke was born on April 18, 1922 as the daughter of Andreas Focke and Elisabeth Wensing in Metelen, but grew up in Emsdetten. The decline of the textile industry at the beginning of the 1920s had made it necessary for the family to move there. Already in her youth, she continued to develop her artistic talent, which had clearly shown itself at an early age. Her actual artistic training began in 1942 with evening classes at the Münster Art School, and in 1943 and 1944 she had a place at the private art school for Christian art in Heek-Nienborg, run by Wilhelm Felix Schlüter . However, this type of painting did not satisfy her, and so she initially returned to her parents' house, where a period of intense creativity began. In 1948 Anne Focke went to Oelde to work and study in Heinrich Lückenkötter's workshop. From 1949 to 1954 she studied at the Werkkunstschule Münster with Professor Kurt Schwippert .

In 1954 Anne Focke married the sculptor Herbert Daubenspeck , who also comes from Emsdetten. There the young artist couple built their own studio in 1955/1956 . Due to the offspring of the family - the marriage resulted in a son and two daughters - Anne Daubenspeck-Focke had little time for her artistic activities in the following years.

In 1965 she resumed her artistic work. In addition to drawings and portraits, she created small sculptures of various themes. In 1985 Anne Daubenspeck-Focke designed her first life-size bronze sculpture with the newspaper reader for the Kreislehrgarten in Steinfurt . As a result - often after competitions - a whole series of life-size bronze groups were created for municipal and private clients. Examples of her works in public space are Vom Markt kommend (1986) in Ibbenbüren , the Mettinger figure group Bergmann, Tüötte and Bäuerin mit Kind (1988), the goat group (1990) in Neuenkirchen , the Saerbecker Brunnengeflüster (1991), the Afrouper (1994 ) in Ladbergen as well as meeting after work and care (2007) in Emsdetten . What all these figures have in common is that they are designed to be particularly realistic, but also with a touch of abstraction. Daubenspeck-Focke mostly has her bronze sculptures cast in the Schwab art foundry in Münster-Sprakel. The artist created a total of 170 sculptural works between 1942 and 2002. She designed female figures particularly often.

Since 1954, nativity scenes have also been created for churches, for example for St. Margareta Lengerich and St. Theresia Münster. The artist carved the heads and hands of the figures, usually between 55 and 75 centimeters in size, from various types of wood .

In addition, Anne Daubenspeck-Focke created numerous drawings and paintings , especially nudes , still lifes and portraits . Her pictures are often characterized by symbolism and often have surrealistic echoes.

She presented her works in more than 40 solo and group exhibitions in West Germany , the Netherlands , Great Britain and in the European Parliament in Strasbourg .

In 1970, Anne Daubenspeck-Focke and her husband were one of the founding members of the Welbergener Kreis artist group .
