from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Münster Design Department (officially MSD / Münster School of Design since 2015 ) is one of the oldest design schools in Germany.

history

The school was founded in 1878 as a private institution under the name of drawing, painting and modeling school . In 1913 it was renamed School for Arts and Crafts , affiliated with the compulsory advanced training school of the city of Münster . In 1937, during the Nazi era , it became the master school of German craftsmanship . The school was bombed out during World War II in 1943. After the war, it resumed operations in 1947, first as the Münster Werkschule , then as the Münster Werkkunstschule , and from 1956 in a building on Sentmaringer Weg in the south of the city of Münster that was converted from a former HJ home. In 1971, the design department has been part of the Münster University of Applied Sciences since it was founded .

present

Since summer 2009, the design department has been located in a new building on the Leonardo Campus in the north of the city, in the vicinity of the architecture department of the Münster University of Applied Sciences and the Münster Art Academy .

18 professors teach about 650 students there in the fields of communication design, illustration, media design and product design. Students can obtain a bachelor's degree here. In 2010 the master's degree in "Information and Communication" was established.

concept

In contrast to most other design schools, the Münster Design Department has not specialized in one design division, but pursues an interdisciplinary approach. In the first two semesters of the six-semester bachelor's degree, students receive a general introduction to the field of design. From the third semester onwards, they specialize in one of the four main areas of communication design, illustration, media design and product design, always working with students from the other disciplines. Another component of the concept is the seminar and project-oriented cooperation with regional and national companies and institutions.
