Editorial concept

Text announcement

Inspired by the model of American law reviews , 360 ° publishes scientific articles and essays by students on the tender principle . Under the main theme of the planned issue, the editors call for typescripts to be sent in, which are also allowed to "illuminate unspecified aspects of the announcement and move into marginal areas". The editorial team is " not only open to unusual interpretations of the tender topic and very special research approaches, but expressly wishes them".

Photo tender

Since 2007 the picture editors have also been calling for topic-related photo series to be submitted. Since then, 360 ° has also published internationally excellent student photo works for the first time, including winners of the Canon ProfiFoto Förderpreis , the PGB Photo Awards or the German Youth Photo Award . The photo series "Kashmir - Valley of tears" from issue 1/2009 was also nominated for the Sony World Photography Awards 2009 and the New York Photo Awards 2009.

Editorial and guest contributions

The editors roll out the focus of each issue in a basic article, the "surcharge". During the “lookup”, experts, public figures and scientists from various disciplines and from research and teaching institutions around the world are asked for concise statements on a question that emphasizes the title topic. In addition to the contributions of the students, one or a maximum of two guest authors discuss selected aspects of the topic from a research and / or teaching perspective . In the expert interview of the respective issue, terms, contexts and underlying connections are questioned. Gudrun Wacker, Dieter Oberndörfer , Gesine Schwan , Karl-Rudolf Korte , Ulrich Herbert , Hans Joachim Gießmann, Susanne Buckley-Zistel, Jutta Allmendinger , Amir Hassan Cheheltan , Konrad Schily , Joseph Vogl , Anna Bergmann , Joseph Vogl and others have been interviewed so far Guillaume Paoli . A glossary explains central and contextually ambiguous terms from the specialist areas of the respective editors, authors or interviewees.

Each issue also contains the so-called “lookup”, in which scientists, experts and other public figures give brief statements on a changing question. So far, Otfried Höffe , Michael Hartmann , Ortwin Renn , Andrea Marlen Esser , Martin Sonneborn , Hubertus Buchstein , Dieter Oberndörfer , Heidrun Friese , Jürgen Kaube , William Dutton and Heinrich August Winkler have participated, along with many others .

The basic article of the respective issue, the expert interviews and, depending on the issue, other content are available for free download on the 360 ° website. Articles that cannot be included in the respective edition due to the dramaturgic or lack of space are added to the print edition as an online supplement.

Self-image

360 ° sees itself as the interface between the university and the public . The journal wants to make the scientific potential of students accessible beyond the borders of the university and does not stop at the simple reproduction of relevant doctrinal opinions. From the student side, a contribution to the socio-political discourse on current issues should be made. The editorial team is keen to present relevant findings that are useful to the readers and go beyond simple information.

Content orientation

The editorial concept is based on the conviction that the expertise of the individual sciences and departments must be transferred into an overall context in order to be able to understand and explain social phenomena . 360 ° authors should make the range of topics of the respective issue, but also the range of possible and meaningful scientific access, legible. Readers without specific specialist knowledge should understand texts published in the journal and be able to understand the processes shown. The targeted readership therefore ranges from high school students to students of all disciplines to readers of post-doctoral students.

Design orientation

In order to achieve the best possible conveyance of the content, 360 ° pursues a writing style that follows journalistic principles. Scientific texts are required to keep an eye on the reading motivation of readers who are unfamiliar with the subject and to also examine the text dramaturgically. 360 operates for scientific journals unusual with textstilistischer, photographic and illustrative design , as they primarily by consumer magazines , special interest titles and news magazines knows. Nonetheless, the editors require references to sources and abstracts for all submissions , which are also published in the booklet, as is customary in scientific journals.

Transdisciplinarity

The spectrum of the mentioned disciplines is expressly not limited to the social sciences . Any target-oriented perspective is welcome in the context of the issue topic. Students from all academic disciplines are explicitly called upon to follow the call for student papers for the respective issue with thematically relevant texts. Submissions in English are possible. Dealing with graphic design , illustration and photography takes this understanding into account.

Selection process and editing process

From the submitted contributions, only a selection of well-founded and argumentatively stringent works will be converted into articles and essays. 360 published unlike other student journals no term papers or unedited excerpts from term papers and theses . Even before submission, the authors must prepare their texts in accordance with the journal's author guidelines. After the application deadline, the editorial team will select those contributions from the submissions that are suitable for publication.

In the editing process , each text is prepared by the author and editor until it is ready for publication. Between the editing phases, the text is also submitted anonymously to at least one, usually two lecturers or academics from outside the university for review. Contributions by guest authors are also discussed and processed by the editorial team in a simplified editing process together with the author, in order to also critically appreciate recognized experts from the student side and not allow authority as an argument . Within the editorial team, too, the author-editor principle is used, for example for the basic article in the relevant themed issue.

Scientific Advisory Board

The scientific advisory board consists of selected professors, lecturers and academics from outside the university. The members of the advisory board review the submitted contributions by the student authors after the first editing phase and also support the editorial team in technical issues. Following the interdisciplinary idea of the journal, the submitted articles are not always presented to advisory board members who work in the subject area of the respective author.
