Konrad Schily

Konrad Schily (born November 7, 1937 in Bochum ) is a German doctor and politician ( FDP ). From 1982 to 1999 and from 2002 to 2004 he was President of the University of Witten / Herdecke .

Life

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1957 in Wuppertal , Schily studied medicine in Tübingen and Hamburg , which he completed in 1964 with the state examination . After the subsequent time as a medical assistant, he became an assistant doctor at the University Hospital Tübingen in 1966. In 1966 also his promotion to Dr. med. with the work “The behavior of postrotatory nystagmus after multiple rotations and under the influence of fatigue” . After he had been a member of the board of directors of the Herdecke community hospital since 1966 , he continued his medical work here, initially in the field of clinical chemistry and later in neurology and psychiatry , when it began operating in 1969 . Schily is a specialist in neurology and psychiatry.

Party career

Konrad Schily was a member of the SPD from 1973 to 1990 . From 2003 he became involved in the FDP-affiliated “Innovative Group NRW liberal” and in 2005 also became a member of the FDP.

Member of Parliament

From 2005 to 2009 Konrad Schily was a member of the German Bundestag . Here he was a member of the Health Committee. He was drawn into the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In the 2009 federal election , he ran again, but reached no new mandate.

Other engagement

From 1982 to 1999 Schily was the founding president and from 2002 to 2004 again president of the private university in Witten / Herdecke . When the private Nordic University was founded in 1985, he was temporarily involved as a mentor and board member of the sponsoring association. Since 2004 he has been honorary chairman of the board of directors. In November 2006, he resigned from the university's board of directors due to “differing views on the further strategic direction of the UWH”.

From 2002 to 2008 Schily was an honorary member of the Foodwatch Supervisory Board .

Private

Like his older brother Otto Schily, Konrad Schily comes from a wealthy upper-class family and received an anthroposophical upbringing. His father, Franz Schily, was a doctor of smelting in Bochum, and his mother was a musician. His paternal grandmother was the painter Julia Schily-Koppers . He has two other brothers and a sister. He was married for 20 years, is divorced and has four children.

Political positions

In the past, Schily had particularly advocated low tuition fees , which met resistance.
