Editorial design

Under Editorial Design ( english to edit , 'edit) refers to the figures of periodicals, newspapers, magazines, brochures and books.

In design practice, editorial design takes place in direct connection with editorial work, i. H. in collaboration with editors , photographers and illustrators . In addition to the design of the cover , the editorial design also includes the development of a design grid for the content and the overall visual design of entire issues. The selection and placement of photos, typography and typesetting give the whole thing a recognizable character and should both give each article a look that matches the content and shape the overall appearance of the medium.

The layout and typography are defined for print products , but also the corporate design (style, visual language , color character , advertising measures ...) in editorial design . In detail for the print product and accompanying, advertising media:

  • format
  • Type area
  • Fonts, usually as families for different text modules, such as headings, running texts, comments, captions, etc.
  • White space (placement, distances, image sizes) or ratio of text to image to total area

  • Coloring (colors of fonts, backgrounds, graphic elements, color images, color character of the images)
