Christof Gassner trained as a graphic designer at the Zurich School of Applied Arts , among others with Josef Müller-Brockmann and Walter Käch . He has had his own graphic design studio in Frankfurt am Main since 1966 , and in Darmstadt from 1992 . His work focuses on editorial design , corporate design as well as book design and design of postage stamps and posters . His most famous logos include the branding of the Weilrod loudspeaker manufacturer Canton Elektronik and that of the ÖKO-TEST magazine , for which he was responsible from 1984 to 1990. The book he published, everyday life, ecology, design - creating environmental magazines provides just as impressive information on this as the video portrait in which he outlines the development of the consumer magazine.

Between April 2013 and September 2015 the exhibition “Less, but better design in Frankfurt 1925 to 1985: The Frankfurt Room” was on view at the Museum Angewandte Kunst (Frankfurt am Main) . This was followed in March 2016 by the exhibition “Alles neu! 100 Years of New Typography and New Graphics in Frankfurt am Main ”. What both exhibitions have in common is that they also present Christof Gassner's works as examples for the respective context. His design concepts for Canton and the ÖKO-TEST magazine can be found there alongside the design icons from the “BRAUN Design Collection” created by Dieter Rams . But the ÖKO-TEST magazine, which is recognized in both exhibitions as an example of how typography and graphics are handled, is, apart from the logo, no longer the magazine that is available in kiosks today, but the one for which Christof Gassner was responsible for the design in the mid-1980s.
