The Canton Elektronik GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer of loudspeakers and loudspeaker boxes . The company's headquarters are in Weilrod ( Taunus ), Niederlauken district , approx. 35 kilometers northwest of Frankfurt am Main . The name Canton is made up of the Latin cantare (English: 'to sing') and the German word Ton .

Canton Elektronik GmbH is the largest German HiFi loudspeaker manufacturer and the third largest in Europe. The company logo is derived from the representation of an acoustic wave front and shows the increasing volume of the sound (crescendo).

The company sells its products worldwide. The loudspeaker spectrum ranges from floor-standing and shelf boxes to various home cinema and surround systems through to special built-in speakers. In addition, Canton offers a series of high-quality speakers in the upper price segment under the name “Reference”.

Canton has its own development department with anechoic chamber, a production facility in the Czech Republic and is a member of the High End Society marketing association.

history

The company was founded in October 1972 by Hubert Milbers (management), Otfried Sandig (marketing, sales), Wolfgang Seikritt (development) and Günther Seitz (technology). In the same year the first bookshelf loudspeaker in the LE series appeared.

  • In 1979 the first floorstanding loudspeaker of the “Ergo” series came onto the market. The following year, the first was on a subwoofer - satellite system.
  • 1980: first subwoofer satellite system (one GLS-50 subwoofer, two GL-210 speakers)
  • 1981: Canton entered the increasingly digital audio age with the “Quinto” speaker series. The Quinto 510 bookshelf speaker is the most compact model to date.
  • 1983: With the loudspeakers of the "Pullman" series, Canton expanded its range to include car hi-fi loudspeakers.
  • 1981: Titanium hard dome tweeter for the high frequency range
  • 1985: CA 30 enables electronic regulation of the swing-in and swing-out behavior.
  • 1986: EC-P 1 preamplifier for active loudspeakers
  • 1993: SC technology extends the transmission range down by more than an octave.
  • In 1995 the first commercially available digitally equalized loudspeaker, the "Digital 1", was presented. The box was awarded the European Audio Award for “best audio innovation”.
  • In 1998 Canton presented its first surround system based on THX specifications. At the same time, the "Ergo" series is being expanded to include the RC-L floorstanding loudspeakers.
  • In 1999 the "Popsmart" series came on the market. These are compact speakers with a transparent plastic housing that is available in several colors. In the same year Günther Seitz becomes sole managing director of the company.
  • The "Movie" series followed in 2000, with compact housings tailored to modern home furnishings.
  • 2002: Canton presented a new top model with the "Karat Reference 2 DC". During the development of this loudspeaker system, special analysis and simulation methods were used to determine the effects of modifications to the housing, loudspeaker crossover and loudspeaker chassis during the design phase.
  • 2003: Slim aluminum housings are used for the first time in the “CD” series presented .
  • In 2004 Canton presented the patented "Wave" or "double bead" technology, which is supposed to enable more membrane travel and clearer sound compared to conventional membrane suspensions.
  • In 2005 Canton was the first manufacturer to mass- produce the “CD 3500 wireless”, a high-quality wireless loudspeaker . The technology used works with bidirectional data transfer and offers high transmission quality between sender and receiver. The system is noise-free and insensitive to external sources of interference such as cell phones , microwave ovens or WLAN networks. In the same year, the “Vento” model series came onto the market, which is qualitatively above the “Karat” series.
  • In 2007 the “Digital Movie” series was presented with its own 2.1 virtual surround concept.
  • In 2009 the "Reference" series was introduced and the technology carrier Reference 1.2 DC was presented.
  • 2011: Presentation of the "your_World" series - modern wireless loudspeakers with a wide range of possible uses.
