history

The main building of Neuweilnau Castle, built around 1520

At Rod an der Weil you will find an old Rentmauer ring wall from Celtic prehistoric times. The first written mention of a village from this area is Mauloff, in 1156 ("Mulefo"). The imposing round tower of the castle ruins in Altweilnau is dated to around 1200. In 1302, when the County of Weilnau finally separated from the County of Diez , Neuweilnau Castle was built on the opposite side of the valley , which was converted into a castle in the 16th century.

Church building

The community Weilrod was created in the course of the regional reform in Hesse through the legally determined amalgamation of the communities Emmershausen , Hasselbach , Niederlauken , Oberlauken , Rod an der Weil and Weilnau on August 1, 1972. The community Rod an der Weil was through on December 31, 1971 the voluntary amalgamation of the communities Rod an der Weil, Cratzenbach , Gemünden and Winden emerged. Likewise, the community of Weilnau was created through the voluntary amalgamation of the communities of Altweilnau , Finsternthal , Mauloff , Neuweilnau and Riedelbach on December 1, 1970.

For the area of the originally 13 independent communities in the area of Weilrod, local districts with local advisory council and local councilor were established by main statute . The boundaries of the local districts are not specifically defined and therefore follow the previous district boundaries.

Naming

The name Weilrod was formed when the former municipalities were merged from the syllables “Weil” and “Rod” in the names of these municipalities . These syllables come from the Weil river, which characterizes the landscape of Weilrod and the neighboring municipality of Schmitten, and from the word "clearing".

Both terms can be found in the place names as follows:

  • Neu- and Altweilnau (Weil + Aue)
  • Rod an der Weil (Rod (-en) + Weil)
  • Riedelbach (Roden + Bach)

According to legend, the village of Mauloff has a special name. Since the village name does not fit into a normal pattern, the name is an excellent target for legends and stories. One of them reports that the village was initially nameless. In order to change that, the mayor called a meeting and - as there was no result and everyone was helplessly silent - decided that the next spoken word should be the village name. After a long silence, the mayor finally lost patience and shouted “Maul off!” (“Open your mouth!”). Mauloff was first mentioned in 1156 as "Mulefo", probably as a rest stop on the medieval high road, the Rennstraße .

economy

During the economic boom in the 1950s, the villages that make up Weilrod today were a popular local recreation area for residents of the nearby Rhine-Main area . Furthermore, many places were given the status of "climatic health resort" and were specifically frequented for the regeneration of miners from the Ruhr area. That led u. a. to the fact that an unusually high number of restaurants, cafes and boarding houses have settled in Weilrod. Since the late 1970s, tourism v. a. significantly decreased due to the cheaper flat-rate air travel and colliery deaths. Nevertheless, the landscape in the municipal area attracts hikers and cyclists. In this regard, the Weiltalweg plays an important role. The loudspeaker manufacturer Canton Elektronik was founded in Weilrod and has its headquarters there to this day. With the headquarters of the tool technology company Mania Technologie in the Riedelbach district, a bungalow -style company location was incorporated into the rural landscape. The fittings, pipe and industrial technology company AZ (Anne Zimmermann) was established in Hasselbach and has had its AZ industrial technology division there since the late 1990s. There are also several seminar hotels and training companies. Grünauer Maschinen GmbH has also had its headquarters in the Riedelbach industrial park since 2015.
