Glashütten is a municipality in the Hessian Hochtaunuskreis . The Taunus community , which was formed from the three formerly independent communities Glashütten, Schloßborn and Oberems , is located in the Taunus Nature Park not far from Königstein im Taunus .

geography

Geographical location

A substantial part of the municipal area of Glashütten is located in the narrow strip of the Hohe Taunus and includes three peaks of the Taunushauptkamm : the Butznickel (462 meters) in the district of Schloßborn and in the district of Glashütten the Glaskopf (687 meters) and with the Kleiner Feldberg ( 826 meters) the second highest Taunus summit ever. The main town Glashütten itself is one kilometer west of the Glaskopf on federal road 8 , where it crosses the Limes . The Limes forms the northern boundary of Schloßborn and Glashütten in the municipality . The Oberems district is north of the Limes. In 1967 the place received the award of recognized climatic health resort , was revoked in 1987 because the conditions were no longer met.

Neighboring communities

Glashütten borders in the north on the municipalities of Waldems ( Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis ) and Schmitten , in the east on the city of Königstein , in the south on the cities of Kelkheim and Eppstein (both Main-Taunus-Kreis ) and in the west on the city of Idstein (Rheingau -Taunus-Kreis).

structure

Glashütten consists of the three districts Glashütten, Oberems and Schloßborn .

history

In ancient times, the area of today's municipality of Glashütten was the border area between the Roman province of Germania superior and free Germania. The Limes ran through the middle of today's municipal area .

In the early Middle Ages the area became Alemannic and later Franconian .

Schlossborn is first mentioned in a document in 1043 and Oberems in 1294. The territory was in the possession of the Lords of Königstein-Eppstein, initially as a fief of Kurmainz , and Oberems later in Nassau .

The place Glashütten can be traced back to several forest glassworks that were located in the woods between the settlement and the Großer Feldberg . The relics of such a glassworks have been preserved in the Ems Gorge.

On April 6, 1462, Glashütten was involved in the battles of the Mainz collegiate feud . Count Eberhard von Königstein-Eppstein was one of the most important allies of Adolf von Nassau . The historian Karl Menzel reports of an attack by Diether von Isenburg's troops on the "well-fortified position of the enemy" (which is probably Königstein Castle ), but the allies saw themselves forced to retreat on April 9, 1462 after major losses. The destruction of the glassworks would have caused Adolf great economic damage.

With the end of the Old Empire in 1806, the entire municipality was annexed to Nassau , then in 1866 after the Austro-Prussian War of Prussia . According to the founding document of the Kurmainzer government from January 1685, 12 settlers, including glassmakers, founded the place glassworks. Population: 1685 12 settlers 1783 127 1983 2,317

Incorporations

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse , on December 31, 1971, Glashütten and Oberems merged voluntarily to form the Glashütten community; on August 1, 1972, Schloßborn was compulsorily incorporated into Glashütten by state law . Local districts were not formed in glassworks.

Parish partnership

Since 1977, there is a community partnership with the French community Caromb . In 1972 the mayor of Caromb, Dr. Gilbert Pellenc, on the occasion of the establishment of the town twinning of Königstein and Le Cannet Rochville im Taunus, and got in touch with the representatives of Glashütten about an own partnership. On March 19, 1976, the support group of the community partnership Glashütten was founded. After an exchange took place at the club level, the sponsorship certificate was signed on September 17, 1977 by the mayor of Glashütten Johann Gottschalk and the mayor of Caromb, Gilbert Pellenc. Traditionally, since the beginning of the 1990s, a Provencal market has been held annually in glassworks , at which Caromb is presented. In return, the Glashüttener are represented with a stand at the Christmas market in Caromb every year at the beginning of December.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Glashütten was drawn by Heinz Ritt and approved on April 30, 1974 by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior . It shows a shield, split by a rising, curly point with a golden lion's head in a blue field strewn with golden shingles, a blue tower in gold in front, a blue tree with roots in gold behind.

The elements of the coat of arms refer to the individual districts. The tower refers to Schloßborn and its former medieval castle. The tree references the earlier Glashütte seal and its importance as a recreational area. The Nassau lion stands for Oberems, which, unlike the other two districts, no longer belonged to Kurmainz, but to the Principality of Nassau-Usingen , since the High Middle Ages .

Attractions

Glashütten is a destination for day trippers from all over the Rhine-Main area. Sights in the municipality are:

Glassworks

Remains of the Emsbach Gorge Waldglashütte
Waldglasweg, station 3

The remains of the glassworks at the Emsbach Gorge can be found on the gorge-like narrowed valley floor of the Emsbach . The glassworks existed around 1450. In 2000, excavations took place at the facility . The WaldGlasWeg runs as a hiking trail from the village to the glassworks .

The glassworks below on Dornsweg on the northeast slope of the Glaskopf elevation produced glass in the second half of the 15th century. On the basis of the severe signs of destruction on the main furnace, it is suspected that the glassworks was forcibly closed while it was still in operation. Archaeological investigations were carried out in 2001 and 2005.

The remains of the glassworks on Buchholzweg are at 543  m above sea level. NHN in a wooded area on the northern slope of the Glaskopf elevation. An archaeological investigation at the location of the glassworks took place in 2002.

limes

The small fort Maisel is located northwest of the main town Glashütten . It is a single-gate stone structure of almost 0.7 ha in size, which was probably built around the year 160 in connection with the strengthening of the Limes . The traces of the camp with its gate pointing to the Limes are still clearly visible in the area.

The Limes itself runs right through the municipality. The actual Feldberg fort also still belongs to glassworks. The north-west wall of the fort lies on the border with Niederreifenberg . At the northern exit of Glashütten an “entrance portal” to the Limes is to be built, which will serve as a contact point for Limes hikes.

Weilquelle

Weilquelle

The source of the Weil brook is geographically on the other side of the Glaskopf and is therefore attributed to Niederreifenberg by visitors , but is (just about) located in the Glashütten area.

Hiking trails

A number of hiking trails open up the Taunus around Glashütten for hikers, walkers and cyclists. Two European long-distance hiking trails also cross here : E1 (north-south) and E3 (west-east).

Infrastructure

Glashütten is on the B 8 federal road ( Emmerich - Passau ).

There are regular bus connections to Königstein, Neu-Anspach, Riedelbach and Idstein as well as from Schloßborn to Eppstein.

The German Limes Cycle Route runs through the village . This follows the Upper German-Raetian Limes over 818 km from Bad Hönningen on the Rhine to Regensburg on the Danube .
