Karl Menzel (born November 3, 1835 in Speyer , † May 10, 1897 in Bonn ) was a German historian .

Life

Karl Menzel studied history in Munich . Since 1856 he was a member of the Isaria Corps . Menzel received his doctorate from Heinrich von Sybel in Munich in 1861 with a thesis on Friedrich I (Palatinate) . Shortly afterwards in 1862 Sybel moved to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . Menzel was therefore unable to complete his habilitation at Sybel in Munich. On the advice of Wilhelm von Giesebrecht, he wanted to do his habilitation with Julius Weizsäcker in Erlangen with a thesis on Diether von Isenburg, Archbishop of Mainz 1459–1463 , but failed. Sybel feared that the opposition of his Munich colleagues could be to Menzel's disadvantage. Nevertheless, the work appeared in print in 1868. In the same year he became archive secretary in Weimar on Sybel's recommendation.

Most recently he was full professor in Bonn since 1873 . He held the chair for historical auxiliary sciences. This chair was also established at the University of Bonn on Sybel's initiative. Menzel was a member of the Society for Rhenish History , in which he was a member of the board. In addition to him, that included Arnold Schaefer , Karl Lamprecht , Wilhelm Maurenbrecher and Moriz Ritter . That was practically the entire faculty of the History Department.

The Bonn Historical Seminar was not held in high esteem by Karl Lamprecht when he was a private lecturer there. In a letter to his brother from 1882, Lamprecht characterized his colleagues in Bonn as an intriguer (knight), a pedant (Menzel) and a beer genius (Maurenbrecher).

Menzel was close to his teacher Sybel not only in technical but also in political terms. Among other things, he appeared as an election speaker for the National Liberal Party . He was Otto von Bismarck's supporter of the Kulturkampf .
