geography

location

Oberems is located within the eastern Hintertaunus about 24 km northwest of Frankfurt am Main on the other side of the Taunus main ridge . In Taunus Nature Park, it is located approximately 3.8 km west-northwest of the summit of the Great Feldberg Mountain ( 881.5  m ) and about 2.3 km (depending crow flies ) north-northwest of the glass head ( 686.8  m ). Neighboring towns of Oberems are Seelenberg in the north-northeast, Nieder- with Oberreifenberg in the east-northeast, Glashütten in the south, Kröftel in the southwest, Nieder-Oberrod in the west and Wüstems in the north-northwest.

The rocky peak is an approximately 640  m high slate elevation east of Oberems. It is a popular training area for mountaineers and part of the Weilsberg , which belongs to Niederreifenberg and , at 700.7  m, is the fourth-highest elevation of the Taunus. Below the tine there is a similar rock formation that is not as well known as "small points", and not by strong forest cover more of the tines can be seen directly.

Emsbach

The Emsbach , from which the village name is derived, flows through Oberems . It is a stream that rises southeast of Oberems on the Kleiner Feldberg, flows through Oberems, Waldems and on through the Goldener Grund to Bad Camberg and flows into the Lahn near Limburg . The Emsbach spring is historically known as Seelborn . The Upper Emsbachtal nature reserve is located above the village's sports field .

history

Old town hall Oberems

The area of today's Oberems lay beyond the Limes in Roman times , but was certainly not spared from Roman influences, since the Limes divides the Taunus community between the districts of Glashütten and Oberems, in the upper Emsbach valley between Glaskopf and the small Feldberg, in the area of the "Emsbach Gorge". Later mainly Alemanni and later Franks settled in the area . From 790 the Taunus was considered completely Christianized and was affiliated to the diocese of Mainz in pastoral care.

The first documentary mention of Oberems comes from the Lehnsbuch of the Lords of Eppstein from the year 1294. However, Oberems is probably older: Many sites of earlier iron ore smelting and coal mining make earlier settlements seem plausible.

In contrast to the other districts of Glashütten, Oberems was historically part of Nassau-Usingen . As a result, Oberems became part of the Duchy of Nassau or the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau .

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipalities of Oberems and Glashütten voluntarily merged to form the municipality of Glashütten on December 31, 1971.

Economy and Infrastructure

The business is limited to a restaurant, a car workshop and a hairdresser, as well as a few farms. Today the residents are commuters to the Rhein-Main area. This has increased the number of residents from 303 in 1910 to around 1010 now. Between the glassworks and Oberems there were glassworks in the Middle Ages, from which the name of the large community is derived.

The Commerzbank AG operates its training center in Oberems since 1975th

Fire station

In the village are the Protestant church, a forest kindergarten and the Oberems Protestant kindergarten.

Fountain

The village square is decorated with the cast iron fountain from 1879. On June 3, 1879, the municipality of Oberems awarded the contract to deliver the fountain to Wilhelm Dauber in Heftrich for 220 marks and 40 pfennigs . He replaced the middle of the town's wooden running wells , which had become leaky. From the fact that it is identical in construction to the fountain in Dasbach, it is highly likely that this fountain was also poured in the Michelbacher Hütte . The fountain, originally painted with green oil paint, was moved from the center of the village to Pfannengasse in the first half of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century the well was in poor condition. With the help of donations, a renovation was carried out and the fountain was moved back to its current location in the center of the village.

traffic

The federal highway 8 runs above the village and opens up the journey via Königstein im Taunus to Frankfurt am Main in the south and Limburg an der Lahn in the north. There are regular bus connections from Oberems to Königstein, Riedelbach and Neu-Anspach.

Leisure and sports facilities

In the region, Oberems is known, among other things, for the Oberems glider airfield , an airfield owned by the Feldberg aviation group, located north-northwest of Oberems in the direction of Wüstems.

There is also a soccer field in the forest at the upper end of the Mühlweg. It was renovated in 2005 for 600,000 euros and provided with an artificial turf play area. The Oberemser football club Zackenkicker has its domicile here. The name of the club ( Zackenkicker ) was named after the nearby rock formation of the " Zacken ".
