Geographical location

Wüstems is located in the eastern Hintertaunus of the Rhine-Taunus nature park in a valley of the Emsbach . In the east to northeast of the village, the wooded Windhain rises as part of the Feldberg-Langhals-Pferdskopf-Scholle . With a height of 629.3 m, it is the highest mountain in the Rheingau-Taunus district. At its foot, at around 400 m above sea level, the Hasselbach rises , which flows into the Emsbach near the center of the village at Langgasse. In the west of the village is the grassy, 394.1 m high plateau of the Isberg , a side knoll of the 465.2 m high mountain Hot Head in turn south-southwest of the place. In the northwest, the mountain Burg of the Waldems ring wall rises to 459.1 m, surrounded by the Reichenbach in the west and the Furtwiesenbach on the other side, which also flow into the Emsbach.

Neighboring communities

In the north-north-west of Wüstems is Reichenbach , in the west Niederems and the associated settlement Reinborn , all of which are districts of Waldems. In the east, already beyond the Windhain , lies Seelenberg , in the southeast Oberems and Nieder-Oberrod in the southwest, beyond the Heißen Kopf .

history

Historical place names

The village is first mentioned in writing as Woostenemese in 1274, later sources name the place Wosten Emsse (1435), Wustenembß (1566) and Wustenembs (around 1650). The nearby ramparts suggest that there was a settlement in the early Middle Ages. The place name consists of two parts, namely Wüst von Wüstung and Ems from the eponymous brook that flows through the valley.

Population development

While there were 19 households left in 1566, their number fell to 5 in 1648 after the end of the Thirty Years War . In 1821 103 people lived again in Wüstems, at that time part of the Duchy of Nassau . In the course of industrialization , the number of inhabitants in Wüstem grew rapidly. In 1885, 183 people, all of them Protestants, lived in the now Prussian village. Of the 440 hectares recorded at the time , a fifth was in fields, seven and a half percent in meadows and almost 70 percent in logging.

In 1905 Wüstems already had 193 inhabitants, a size that was to last even after the First World War . After 177 people lived in Wüstems when the Second World War broke out , there were suddenly 258 in 1946. Of the 246 citizens recorded in 1961, 11 percent belonged to the Catholic and 86 percent to the Protestant faith.

Incorporation

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the municipality of Wüstems was merged by law on August 1, 1972 with five neighboring municipalities from the Untertaunus district and the district of Usingen to form the new municipality of Waldems. As for every district, the main statute also established a local district with a local advisory board and mayor for Wüstems .
