Weiltalweg

Between the Weilroder districts of Neuweilnau and Rod an der Weil / Ziegelhütte, the Weiltalweg runs in close proximity to Weil.
Between Essershausen and Freienfels it can be clearly seen that the Weiltalbahn used to run here instead of the Weiltalweg

The Weiltalweg is a 48 kilometer long cycle and hiking trail in the Taunus from the source of the Weil am Kleine Feldberg to its confluence with the Lahn near Weilburg . It was planned and implemented in 1991 by the Frankfurt Umlandverband .

Directions

Weiltalbus

The Weiltalweg begins near the source of the Weil at the Red Cross below the Großer Feldberg. It goes steeply downhill to Schmitten . Then via Weilmünster to the Lahn near Weilburg . There is a connection to the Lahntal cycle path towards Wetzlar and Gießen as well as Limburg and on to Lahnstein to the Rhine .

The cycle path follows the Weil valley and runs between Weilmünster and Gunthersau near Weilburg almost exclusively on the route of the former Weiltalbahn . It overcomes 560 meters of altitude and is mostly gravel, but also briefly runs on public roads. In the upper area, the path is only suitable for safe cyclists due to the steep descents on Split. The Weiltalweg is signposted along the way. Between Hunoldstal and the Landsteiner Mühle in front of Altweilnau there is a three-kilometer route up 92 meters in altitude and 130 meters down.

Grävenwiesbach : From the Taunusbahn you can get to the Weiltalweg along the neighborhood to the former Weiltalbahn on side roads via Mönstadt and a forest path shortly before Weilburg. Weilburg : The Weiltalweg ends at the Lahn on the Lahntal cycle path , which in this section is also the Hessian long-distance cycle path R7. After about one kilometer in the direction of Weilburg you will reach Weilburg train station. The regional train from Limburg to Gießen and the regional express from Koblenz to Gießen stop there.

Information board for the Weiltalweg

Two paths, south and north around the Großer Feldberg, lead from the Sandplacken bus stop (669 m above sea level) to the starting point of the Weiltalweg at the Red Cross (688 m above sea level).

The northern route is the Limes cycle route . From the bus stop in the direction of Weilburg you cross the street, drive past the inn and across the parking lot. The Limes cycle path only runs to the left of the road to the Großer Feldberg . You cross this after 300 meters. The cycle route climbs 2.5 kilometers continuously to a height of 773 m and then continuously descends. After 4.2 kilometers you reach the footpath to Weilquelle , shortly afterwards you pass the Roman fort .

The southern path is much flatter and offers views of the Frankfurt area on the way to the Fuchstanz . Before the intersection with the Großer Feldberg, a path branches off to the left. After four kilometers you have reached the Fuchstanz restaurant. In the reverse direction there is a path up to the left. There are 63 meters of altitude difference to be overcome over 1.2 kilometers. At the fork in the road, take the flat path on the left. The last part runs parallel to the street on the right.

Alternative high altitude route: Red Cross - Weilmünster

The high altitude route, which has only a few small inclines, is particularly worthwhile on hot days.

Drive down the street in the direction of Schmitten and then left twice in the forest parking lot and then right, or drive down the Weiltalweg at the next crossroads and cross the street. A well-developed bike and hiking trail is the racing road leading through large forest areas . Very gradually you come to the middle layers of the Taunus, the so-called eastern Hintertaunus . You drive past the mountain ranges above the villages, just a short stretch of side road and you pass the Riedelbach glider airfield . This avoids the 92 meter ascent behind Hunoldstal . Several well-drivable forest paths lead right down to the Weiltalweg, including the signposted Hessian long-distance cycle route R6. For example via Mauloff and from there left of the road down the forest path.
