Ivan Rebroff (2006)

Ivan Rebroff , real name Hans Rolf Rippert (born July 31, 1931 in Berlin - Spandau ; † February 27, 2008 in Frankfurt am Main ), was a German singer with a bass voice who had a vocal range of more than four thanks to his falsetto voice Possessed octaves. He is registered in the 1993 Guinness Book of Records as the person with the broadest vocal range in the world (4½ octaves).

Life

Rebroff was born as Hans Rolf Rippert in the Berlin district of Spandau as the son of the engineer Paul Rippert (* 1897 in Liebenwerda ) and his wife Luise Fenske (* 1896 in Bromberg ). He was the younger brother of the future ZDF sports reporter Horst Rippert (1922-2013). There are various unconfirmed legends about his ancestors, according to which the mother was of Russian, the father of Jewish-Russian descent.

Rebroff grew up in Belzig and Halle (Saale) , where he was a member of the Stadtsingechor . He later lived alternately in Zell-Weierbach , in a small hunting lodge near Hunoldstal and on the Greek island of Skopelos .

Rebroff studied singing at the State University of Music in Hamburg from 1951 to 1959 as a Fulbright scholar . His singing teacher Adolf Detel made him an interpreter of Eastern European songs. In 1958, Rebroff won the German University Competition. Then he was a singer in the Black Sea Cossack Choir and in the Ural Cossack Choir . Membership in the Don Cossack Choir Serge Jaroff is at least doubtful, despite multiple statements. In 1960 he won first prize at the 9th ARD International Music Competition in Munich .

Rebroff became known through the role of the milkman Tevje in the musical Anatevka in the Théâtre Marigny on the Parisian Champs-Élysées , where he gave over 1,400 performances. He then took part in various touring productions and feature films, including Der Barber von Sevilla , Boris Godunow , Der Zigeunerbaron , Wiener Blut and Der Rosenkavalier . There were also appearances in numerous television programs. He gave concerts in concert halls, churches and at gala events, most recently in December 2007 in the Vienna Votive Church . Based on The Three Tenors , Rebroff occasionally performed with Gunther Emmerlich and Günter Wewel as The Three Basses .

In 1985 Rebroff was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in recognition of his achievements in promoting international understanding between East and West . He was also an honorary citizen of the Greek island of Skopelos from the age of 60 .

Rebroff has received a total of 49 gold records worldwide and one platinum record for 10 million LPs sold since 1975.

pseudonym

The pseudonym Rebroff is derived from the Russian translation ребро (rebro) of the German word Rippe . Ivan is the Russian form of Johannes or Hans . In keeping with this pseudonym, Rebroff wore a powerful full beard and at events and on official photos he always wore a traditional Russian fur hat and matching folklore clothing. This staging and his slight accent always made him appear like a “real Russian”, as some imagined him to be based on clichés that were widespread in West Germany at the time.

Legal dispute against the Alois Müller dairy

In 1994 Rebroff successfully sued the Müller dairy for violating his personal rights. The dairy had used a double in a commercial because they did not want to pay Rebroff the fee. The Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court ruled Rebroff and sentenced Müller to retrospectively pay license fees of 155,000 D-Marks .
