Black eyes ( Russian Очи чёрные Otschi tschornyje ) is one of the most famous Russian songs. The lyrics come from a poem by the Ukrainian writer and poet Jewhen Hrebinka (Russian: Jewgeni Grebjonka ), which was published for the first time on January 17, 1843 in the Literaturnaja Gazeta . Contrary to what is often assumed, the melody does not come from a gypsy tune, but from the piece Hommage Valse Opus 21 by the German Florian Hermann (in an arrangement by S. Gerdels), which was published on March 7, 1884.
Besides the original version of Jewhen Hrebinka there are other forms of the song. Among other things, the version of the famous Russian opera singer Fyodor Ivanovich Chalyapin .
