Yevhen Pawlowytsch Hrebinka ( Ukrainian Євген Павлович Гребінка , scientific. Transliteration Jevhen Pavlovyč Hrebinka ; Russian Евгений Павлович Гребёнка Yevgeny Pavlovich Grebjonka born January 21, jul. / 2. February  1812 greg. In Ubjeschyschtsche , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † December 3 July / December 15,  1848 greg. in Saint Petersburg ) was a Ukrainian translator, educator and writer, who is ascribed to the Romantic period . He wrote in Russian and Ukrainian .

Hrebinka was born as a scion of a Cossack family in Ubjeschyschtsche, today's Marjaniwka in the Ukrainian Oblast Poltava . His father was a small landowner and a retired hussar officer in the Russian army . In 1831 he published his first literary works.

From the beginning of 1834 he lived in Saint Petersburg, where he taught at military schools, among other things, and met Taras Shevchenko through Ivan Soshenko , whom he supported in his ransom from serfdom. The most famous works include Little Russian Fables from 1834, which is one of the best collections of Ukrainian fables . Other important works are the Stories of a Pyriatyn from 1837 and the historical poems Hetman Svihorskyj from 1842 and Bohdan from 1843.

He also translated Pushkin's Poltava into the Ukrainian language in 1846 , was active as an editor (including: Lastôvka ) and is the author of the text of the famous song " Black Eyes ".

He died at the age of 36 in Saint Petersburg and was buried in his birthplace.

Honors

The Ukrainian city of Hrebinka was named after him.
