The Literaturnaja Gazeta ( Russian Литерату́рная газе́та , literary newspaper ' ) is a Russian weekly newspaper specializing in cultural topics . It has existed with interruptions since 1830, making it one of the oldest of its kind on the Russian press market.

history

Literaturnaja Gazeta first appeared on January 1, 1830. It was founded by a small group of authors that included the poets Anton Delwig , Alexander Pushkin and Pyotr Vyazemsky . The new newspaper was supposed to provide space for young authors in particular to publish their works. In this form it appeared until June 30, 1831 and in the years 1840–1849. Up to this time, in addition to Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol , Jewgeni Baratynski , Nikolai Nekrasov and Alexei Kolzow had some of their works printed there, mostly using pseudonyms.

The newspaper was only reprinted a few years after the October Revolution . The first edition appeared on April 22, 1929, the newspaper was now controlled by the state and should be the central paper of the Soviet Writers' Union. It has been published every Wednesday since 1967 and uses the logo, which has remained almost unchanged since then, and which also contains profile images of Pushkin and Maxim Gorky . The subject area of the newspaper was significantly expanded and since then has not only consisted of literature, but also current socio-political topics as well as broad areas of art and science. The focus, however, remained in the literary area; During the Soviet era, almost all of the then known authors had their works published there. The popularity of Literaturnaja Gazeta was correspondingly high: at the end of the 1980s, its circulation reached a good six million.

In 1990 the Literaturnaja Gazeta was one of the first Soviet newspapers to declare itself independent. Since 1997 it has been published by a specially founded publishing house based in Moscow .

present

The current circulation of the newspaper is 83,000 copies. It still appears once a week on Wednesdays and is distributed throughout the territory of the former Soviet Union and, in some cases, abroad. It is now considered to be rather conservative. The editor-in-chief has been the journalist and writer Yuri Polyakov since 2001 .
