Gemünden is a district of the community of Weilrod in the Hessian Hochtaunuskreis .

geography

Gemünden is located in the eastern Hintertaunus of the Taunus Nature Park . The confluence of the Laubach and Sattelbach rivers is in the center of the village . The highest point near Gemünden is the Hardtküppel at 384 meters above sea level .

Neighboring towns are Emmershausen (west), Winden and Heinzenberg (north), Laubach (northeast) and Niederlauken (east).

history

The village, located in a basin, is surrounded by fields and forests. First documented mention in 1402. The confluence of the Laubach and Sattelbach rivers is in the center of the village. Storms and floods always caused disasters in the early days. One of the oldest houses that is still inhabited today, built in 1648, bears the bar inscription: Honor the plaice, it gives us the bread. Agriculture and handicraft businesses guaranteed the daily income of the residents. School education in the elementary school as well as a trade school ensured the knowledge and further education of the Gemündener. Guest houses accommodated many people looking for relaxation.

As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the communities of Gemünden, Rod an der Weil and other communities merged on December 31, 1971 on a voluntary basis to form the community of Rod an der Weil, before this community on August 1, 1972 with several previously independent communities a state law was merged to form the community of Weilrod. In 2002 the village celebrated its 600-year history.

Attractions

The oldest building in town is the bakery . The massive basement was originally a chapel. It was first mentioned in 1580. The origin of the chapel is estimated to be 100 to 200 years earlier. At that time there was a small chapel at the confluence of the Sattelbach and Laubach rivers. Services were very rarely held in this chapel. As a result, the chapel became dilapidated and was converted into a bakery in 1828. In 1948, this oldest building in Gemünden was extended to become a town hall and municipal treasury. After the regional reform in 1972, the local history museum was built in the upper rooms by the Gemünden country women’s association. Many alterations and renovations have already been carried out on this building.

It was not until 1996 that wall paintings from the Old and New Testament were discovered during renewed renovation work. Based on the colors used, the Hessian Office for Monument Protection dated these paintings to the 15th century. Historians hope that the more precise dating of the wall paintings will provide a more precise dating of the construction of the chapel.

The following year, after an interruption of more than 170 years, a service was held in this building again. This stood under the biblical text: "Man does not live from bread alone, but from every word from God's mouth".

tourism

After the Second World War , tourism developed in Gemünden. In March 1967 a local and tourist association was formed. In 1968 there were the "Burckhof" (34 beds), "Zur Linde" (25 beds), "Zur Sonne" (21 beds), "Haus Anita" (9 beds) and others. During this time, the Philipps-Eiche refuge, the water-treading facility that still exists today on the outskirts of Gemünden, and a network of hiking trails were set up. On April 13, 1974 the place received the approval from the Hessian technical committee for health resorts, recreation places and healing wells to use the designation state recognized recreation place . In the following decades, the importance of tourism continued to decline. Presumably around the year 2000, the municipality waived the re-application as a state-recognized resort and lost the title.
