Free flight facility

More than 700 birds live in the Vogelburg in a total of 37 houses and accessible free-flight facilities. These include parrots such as macaws , blue-fronted parrots , gray parrots , red-faced and brown-eared parakeets, and cockatoos . Besides are Beos to see. They are kept individually or in small groups, but more often in large groups with several species.

All buildings are made of locally extracted rubble stone. This gives the complex an appearance that is reminiscent of a medieval castle . The houses are numbered and connected by a network of paths.

The exhibited birds can be fed by the visitors with food that can be purchased and some of them can also be touched. Selected birds are presented several times a day as part of a parrot show in a cinema-like hall, where they perform tricks.

The Vogelburg offers the possibility to take in parrots from private ownership permanently ("retirement home") or temporarily ("pensioner" e.g. as holiday accommodation).

history

Yellow and breasted macaw in the Vogelburg Weilrod

The Vogelburg was founded in 1981 as a private institution. In September 1993 it was temporarily closed by the district president because the keeping was not appropriate to the species. 39 birds were confiscated and placed in official custody. Massive protests were directed against this closure. The SPD in Weilrod also criticized the Hessian nature conservation minister Jörg Jordan (SPD) for this, in their opinion, objectively unjustified closure. At the end of March 1994 the closure order was withdrawn by the regional council and the park reopened. However, only a few of the confiscated animals could be returned, as the majority died during the forced detention caused by the confiscation.
