Seminar paper
A term paper is usually written study work in the framework of a scientific university studies (partial) exam represents.
Seminar work at universities
The topic usually comes from a seminar held at the university , but can also be the development of a field exercise or something similar. Its scope varies depending on the course and type of event and can usually be read in the examination regulations; a seminar paper usually has between 10 and 30 pages in DIN A4 format . Many universities give the number of words or characters required instead of a page number.
As a scientific work , the seminar paper is above all an exercise for learning the techniques and requirements that are required for the preparation of an examination or diploma thesis . Since the authors of seminar papers are expected to have relatively little experience, they are generally not or only partially quotable. Therefore it is forbidden to quote term papers from online providers. This also applies - regardless of the quality of its content - to public or internet access, especially in the legal field.
When preparing a seminar paper - as with any other academic work - strict attention must be paid to a logical structure, clean and honest research, coherent trains of thought and formulations as well as consistent citation and correct quotations and borrowings . In seminar papers there is a scientific style that is characterized by objectivity and clarity.
A seminar work (other than a housework ) either during the lecture time made parallel to a seminar or is a comprehensive development of a Unit , which was maintained at a seminar. In some seminars it is possible to write a group work. As a rule, it must be made clear who is responsible for which part.
Special regulations for high schools
At Bavarian grammar schools, upper level students have to complete a ten-page seminar paper as part of a scientific propaedeutic seminar (W seminar). This is an admission requirement for the Abitur examination. If the thesis is rated as unsatisfactory, the Abitur cannot be completed.
Special regulations for secondary schools
At Bavarian vocational schools and technical colleges , when switching from the 12th to the 13th grade, students must also create a “pre-scientific” work, which is referred to as a seminar paper. This name comes from the fact that this work is usually done in the so-called seminar phase at the end of the 12th grade.
In some German federal states (e.g. Bavaria), a seminar paper must be prepared as part of the propaedeutic science seminar.
In Austria, up to the 2014/15 school year, a departmental thesis could be written as a preliminary examination for the Matura at general secondary schools , which replaced a written exam and should correspond to a seminar paper in terms of scope and scientific nature.
