Ortwin Renn

Ortwin Renn (born December 26, 1951 in Schmidtheim ) is a German sociologist , economist and sustainability scientist . From 1994 to 2016, Renn was professor of technology and environmental sociology at the University of Stuttgart . He is an internationally recognized German risk researcher , chairman of the Sustainability Advisory Board of Baden-Württemberg (NBBW) and director of the non-profit research institute Dialogik. Renn has been Scientific Director of the Potsdam Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) since February 1, 2016 .

biography

Growing up in Jülich as the son of a grammar school director, Renn received his doctorate in social psychology in 1980 after studying economics and sociology at the University of Cologne (graduating with a degree in economics in the social sciences in 1978).

Renn worked as a scientist and university professor in Germany, the USA and Switzerland . From 1986 to 1992 he was Professor of Environmental Sciences at Clark University in Worcester / USA and from 1992 to 1993 visiting professor at the Department of Environmental Sciences at ETH Zurich . From 1992 to 2003 he was a member of the board of directors of the Academy for Technology Assessment in Baden-Württemberg, from 2001 as managing director. In December 2003 he took up the post as director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Risk Research and Sustainable Technology Development (ZIRN) at the International Center for Culture and Technology Research (IZKT) at the University of Stuttgart .

From 2006 to 2012, Renn also headed the Sustainability Advisory Board of the State of Baden-Württemberg and was a member of the “Future of Energy Supply” ethics committee appointed by Chancellor Angela Merkel . From 2013 he was a member of the Science and Technology Advisory Council, an advisory team to the EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso . In 2012 he was elected President of the International Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). Ortwin Renn is a member of the Senate of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (BBAW). He is also a member of other national and international academies of science, on the Scientific Advisory Board of the President of the European Commission ( President's Science and Technology Advisory Council ), on the Panel on Public Participation of the American National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management of the People's Republic of China . In 2002 he was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . Renn is also a member of the Executive Committee of the German Academy for Technical Sciences (Acatech) . Since 2005 he has headed the Sustainability Advisory Board of the State of Baden-Württemberg. In addition, he is on the advisory board for ecological issues both at the Evangelical Church in Württemberg and at the Catholic Bishops' Conference .

He was also a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the Federal Government on Global Change (WBGU) (1996–2000) and the Future Commission 2000 of the State of Baden-Württemberg (1996–2000). He is also a member of national and international evaluation commissions and senate committees (including the Helmholtz Association and Leibniz Association ).

Ortwin Renn has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Risk Dialogue Foundation , St. Gallen, since October 2010 . Since 2012 he has been director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Risk and Innovation Research at the University of Stuttgart (ZIRIUS) and spokesman for the Helmholtz Alliance "Future Infrastructures of Energy Supply - On the Way to Sustainability and Social Responsibility" (together with Armin Grunwald ). From 2013 to 2016 he was also dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Stuttgart.

Renn was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2018 .

Awards

Ortwin Renn received several international awards, including the “ Distinguished Achievement Award ” from the International Society for Risk Analysis (SRA). In November 2007 Ortwin Renn was awarded an honorary doctorate (Dr. sc. Tech. Hc) from ETH Zurich, and in 2020 that of Mittuniversitetet . In 2013 he was awarded the First Class Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in recognition of his academic achievements in Germany and abroad.

  • "Fellow" of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
  • Outstanding Publication Award in 2002 for the book "Risk, Uncertainty and Rational Action" written with C. Jaeger, G. Rosa and Th. Webler
