The Institute for Transformative Sustainability Research (since 2017 its German name, English still: Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies , IASS ) is an association based in Potsdam and aims to show development paths for the global transformation to a sustainable society. The IASS follows a transdisciplinary, dialogue-oriented approach to the joint development of problem understanding and solution options in cooperation between science, politics, business and society. A national and international partner network supports the work of the institute. Central research topics include a. the energy transition , emerging technologies, climate change , air quality , systemic risks , governance and participation as well as cultures of transformation in the Anthropocene .

The Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies eV was founded on February 2, 2009 in Potsdam . The founding director is Klaus Töpfer . He headed the institute as Executive Director until September 2015, together with the Scientific Directors Carlo Rubbia (June 2010 to May 2015) and Mark G. Lawrence (since October 2011).

The institute is intended to carry out cutting-edge research on topics such as climate change and sustainable economics and to give more than 50 scientists job opportunities. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the State of Brandenburg and has a committed budget of 6.6 million euros over seven years. In 2019, the Bundestag decided on special funding of 11 million euros. At the founding event, Federal Research Minister Schavan said : "Under the leadership of Professor Töpfer, the institute can achieve international radiance and underline Germany's strong position in this area".

The institute cooperates closely with the other geological research institutions in Potsdam, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the Potsdam Research Center of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research .

The three scientific directors since 2016 are Mark G. Lawrence , Patrizia Nanz and Ortwin Renn ; Jakob Meyer is the administrative director. The management of the institute rotates among the scientific directors every two years.

The IASS uses various publication formats to share its own work results and recommendations in addition to organizing and participating in events:

  • IASS Policy Briefs - Recommendations for action and assessments of political measures
  • IASS Fact Sheets - collection of current key figures and overviews on the respective topic
  • IASS Studies - More detailed research results along a key question or a working group
  • IASS Working Paper - discussion papers for intermediate results or short-term interventions

In addition, scientific articles appear in various specialist journals , statements, monographs and compilations, as well as introductory dossiers. There is an in-house blog .
