The class 19A locomotives of the South African Railways (SAR) were steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 2'D1 '( Mountain ).
The series was a variant of class 19 for branch lines with a lighter superstructure. It had reduced coupling wheels from 1,372 to 1,295 mm, a reduced cylinder diameter and a slightly smaller cup. The weight difference between the two classes, however, was not very great (4.4 t without tender), and the maximum axle load of the 19A was only 0.3 t lower.
36 copies with the track numbers 675–710 were delivered by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works in 1929 - the only locomotives from this manufacturer in South Africa. Five locomotives (No. 678, 693, 696, 700 and 706) were later given the standard 1A boiler and at least partially a new driver's cab. The converted machines were designated as class 19AR ( information in brackets in the adjacent table). The original boiler from one of these locomotives was used to build Class 20 .
Class 19A / AR was initially spread all over the country and was later concentrated in Natal and the Cape Province . It was retired by 1977. The locomotive no. 692 has been preserved as a monument locomotive in Sterkstroom .
