Sterkstroom is a city in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa . It is located in Enoch Mgijima Parish in Chris Hani District .

geography

The place has, together with the eastern Masakhe township , 7,165 inhabitants (2011 census). The place is located at the southern foot of the Stormberg massif on the Hex River, around 55 kilometers northwest of Queenstown .

history

Sterkstroom was founded in 1875 when a church was being built. The name is Afrikaans and means "strong river", after the Hex River. In 1898 it was given municipal status.

Economy and Transport

Sterkstroom is at the intersection of the R344, which connects Tarkastad in the southwest with Dordrecht in the northeast, and the R397, which runs from Molteno in the northwest to Queenstown in the southeast. The national road N6 runs east of the village . The city is on the Johannesburg - East London railway line and has a train station that is served by freight traffic. A branch line runs eastwards from Sterkstroom to Maclear . There is an airfield to the west of the village.
